The History of the Twelfth Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry
(Formed as a 3 Year Regiment – Served October 1861 through July 1865)
This regiment, known as the "Marching Twelfth", was organized in October, 1861 under the auspice of the U.S. Army's Department of Kansas at Camp Randall, Wisconsin. Leaving the state January 11, 1862, the regiment was earmarked for the New Mexico expedition and did much hard marching for raw soldiers, until the expedition was ultimately abandoned as impractical. The Twelfth Wisconsin was then sent to Columbus Kentucky to repair railroads and rebuild bridges. Soon after their stint as pioneers, they were marched into Humboldt, Tennessee. Here, as a member of the District and Army of West Tennessee, it made numerous brilliant expeditions, clearing the country of guerrillas, suppressing southern sympathizers, and ending the careers of many a bridge-burner.
In the fall of 1862, the regiment was sent south to join Grant's Army of the Tennessee as part of the 3rd Brigade, 4th Division of General McClernand's 13th Corps. From November 1862 until December 1862, the regiment engaging in numerous skirmishes, notably at Hernando, Mississippi, and the Coldwater River. Transferred to the 3rd Brigade, 4th Division of General Lauman's 16th Corps, the regiment was engaged in the investment of Vicksburg, Mississippi with small loss from December 1862 until July 1863. The regiment then fought at the second battle of Jackson, Mississippi. At Big Shanty, with only six of it's ten companies engaged, it charged two miles through the timber, capturing the enemy’s first skirmish line and dislodging a brigade from their rifle-pits.
The gallant regiment was again reassigned, this time to General McPherson's 17th Corps from August 1863 until July 1865. The Twelfth Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry was heavily engaged with this command from the fight at Bolton, Mississippi. In four engagements at Kennesaw Mountain, and through a five day long series of skirmishes along Nickajack Creek, Georgia. It also participated in two fierce battles and ten skirmishes before Atlanta, fought at Jonesboro, and had a three day fight at Lovejoy's Station, Georgia. Joining Sherman’s March to the Sea, it assisted in the investment of Savannah and participated in the Carolina Campaign. It fought at Pocotaligo, tore up railroads, drove the enemy from Orangeburg, and assisted in the capture of Columbia and Winnsboro. The regiment's final actions were joined at Fayetteville, and Bentonville, North Carolina.
Participating in the Union army's final triumphant march northward through Petersburg, Richmond, Fredericksburg and Alexandria, Virginia, the proud Twelfth Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry paraded in the Grand Review in Washington and was mustered out at Louisville, Kentucky on July 16, 1865.
The regiment's original strength was 1,045. Gain by recruits, 420; substitutes, 177; draft, 25; veteran re-enlistments 519; total, 2,186. Losses by death in action, 96; losses by death due to disease and accident, 227; desertion, 26; transfer, 64; discharge, 336; mustered out,1,466.
