Coleman Abrahams was a tailor who was born about 1859 in Russia or Germany. He married Esther Jacobs in 1879 in Canterbury. His wife, Esther, was born in Russia about 1863, and was the oldest daughter of Sarah and Elias Jacobs and, for more information about Esther's parents, Sarah and Elias, as well as her siblings, you can read our Jacobs Family Genealogy page. Coleman and Esther Abrahams were living in the town of Christ Church, England in 1881, but by 1891 had moved to the city of Cardiff in Glamorgan County, Wales. Their children included Hettie (Ettie), Marks, Rebecca, Israel, Samuel, Solomon, Leah, Lena, and Bessie, all born between about 1880 and 1900, as well as Lazarus born about 1902 and Fay who was born about 1904.
Esther Abrahams passed away in Cardiff in 1913, and her husband Coleman Abrahams passed away in 1919, also in Cardiff.
Hettie (Ettie) Abrahams was born in 1880 in Ramsgate, Kent, and was still living with her parents at the time of the 1891 census in Wales. By 1899, she had married the tailor Solomon Mattis Targovnick and they were living in Cardiff, where they had their first two children, Abraham in 1899 and Annie in 1901. Solomon Targovnick's brother, Isaac Targovnick, was living with them at the time of the 1901 Census of Wales.
By the time of the 1911 census, Solomon and Etti had changed the family surname to Matthews and had another five children. To read more about Solomon and Ettie Matthews and all their children, read our page about the Matthews and Targovnicks.
Marks (Mark) Abrahams was born in London about 1881. He married Maud Gittlesohn in October 1904 in Merthyr Tydfil. His wife Maudie Abrahams was born about in Dowlais about 1883, and her parents were the pawnbroker Herman Gittlesohn and his wife Bertha Gittleson.
Mark Abrahams worked as a tailor, and became disabled while serving as a sail maker in the Royal Flying Corps during the Great War. Mark and Maudie do not appear to have had any children.
Samuel Abrahams was born in Cardiff in the September quarter of 1884. He was living with his parents in 1891, but we do not know where he was at the time of the 1901 census of Wales. By 1911, he was living with the family again, and working as a tailor.
Rebecca Abrahams was born in Cardiff in 1886, according to the 1891, 1901 and 1911 Censuses of Wales and birth index. In July 1912 in Cardiff, she married Barnett Corkland, who was born about 1886 and was a commercial traveller and businessman. Barnett's father was David Corkland, who was also a commercial traveller at the time of his son's marriage. Rebecca Corkland passed away late in 1975 in Glamorgan, and Barnett Corkland passed away in Cardiff in April 1941.
Rebecca and Barnett's only child, Hyman E. Corkland, was born in Cardiff in 1914. He never married, and he passed away in Cardiff in 1956.
Israel Abrahams was born in Cardiff in the quarter ending September 1887, according to the Birth Index and the 1891 and 1901 Census of Wales. In 1911, he was working as a tailor and was going by Isidore Abrahams. He passed away in August 1964 in Cardiff.
According to family, he never married, but there is confusion about a marriage record of an Israel Abrahams marrying Annie aka Fanny Segall in 1912. Based on information from their descendants, it seems this may really have been Itsel Targovnik, who was the brother in law of Isreals's sister Hettie through her husband Solomon Targovnick (Matthews).
Soleman (Solly) Abrahams was born in Liverpool about 1892, according to the 1901 and 1911 Censuses of Wales. He worked as a tailor, and was still living with Coleman and Esther Abrahams at the time of the 1911 census in Cardiff.
Leah Abrahams was born in Cardiff in 1895, and is listed in the 1901 and 1911 Censuses of Wales. She married Israel Rosen in August 1914 in Cardiff. Israel was a tailor whose father, David Rosen, was also a tailor.
Lena Abrahams was born in Cardiff about 1898, according to the 1901 Census of Wales. She might be the Hannah Abrahams born in Cardiff about December 1897. Lena married Hyman Romoff, the son of the cap maker Mathew Romoff and Annie Romoff, in 1915, and they had two children, Esther and Colin.
Their daughter Esther Romoff was born in Cardiff in 1916, and was known as Essie Romoff by the family. Essie's first husband passed away without their having any children. She later married Milton Behrman, and they had one child, who married and had a family. Essie Behrman passed away in 1978 and her husband Milton Behrman passed away in 1981, both in Cape Town.
Hyman and Lena Abrahams son, Isadore Coleman Romoff, was born in Cardiff in 1923, and went by Colin Romoff. He married and had family in Johannesburg and Cape Town, South Africa. He passed away in Cape Town in February 2009.
Bessie Abrahams was listed in the 1901 census as being born in Cardiff about 1900. Unfortunately, we have found no birth record nor sign of her after that. However, we have found a birth record for a Goldie Abrahams whose birth was reported in Cardiff in the first quarter of 1900. So, Bessie may be the Goldie Abrahams remembered by family members whose birth we found, but we cannot be sure of this.
According to the 1911 census, two of Esther's thirteen children had passed away by then. Bessie may have been one of them, or she may simply have become known as Goldie as she grew up.
But, whether or not she was ever known as Bessie, Goldie Abrahams definitely married Isidor Hyams, who was known as Julius Hyams by the family. Julius worked as a buyer in the furniture business. They had no children, and Goldie Hyams passed away in 1987 in Manchester.
Lazarus (Lolly) Abrahams was born in Cardiff about 1902. He never married.
Fanny (Fay) Abrahams was born in Cardiff about 1904. She never married.
