Morris Vishnick, a Jewish tailor of Russian Polish descent, was born in 1871 in Russia or Poland, and married Annie Weisgarber (Annie Wiesman?), who was born about 1870, also in Russia or Poland. After having their first daughter, Esther, in about 1890, Morris and Annie moved to England, where they had another five children, Rachel, Jane, Sarah, Meyer, and Bessie Perel, between the years of 1895 and 1904.
Please note that we previously thought Annie's maiden name was Annie Weisman, because her daughter Esther's California Death Index entry, indicates that her mother's maiden name was Weisman. However, according to both her daughter Sarah's birth certificate and her daughter Jane's death certificate, Annie's maiden name was Weisgarber. It is possible that her other relatives changed their surname to Weisman, or that someone just made a mistake on the death certificate.
The rest of this page is only about Morris and Annie and their descendants. If you wish more information about Morris Vishnick's parents and siblings, you can click here.
Morris Vishnick travelled to the United States, on the S. S. Philadelphia, which departed from Southampton, England on July 8, 1905, and arrived in New York on July 15, 1905. Although Esther used to always tell her grandchildren that she came to San Francisco with her father, ahead of the rest of the family, the passenger listings only partially corroborate this. We found her travelling later, in March 1906, on the S. S. Philadelphia, at the age of 17, to meet her father.
The rest of the family came later in the year. Annie Wishnek, as she was listed on the passenger list, departed from Southampton, England on the S.S. St. Louis on November 10, 1906, and arrived in New York on November 18, 1906, accompanied by the rest of the children, Rachel, Jane, Sarah, Meyer, and Perel, and also by Morris' brother Philip, who was also a tailor from Russia.
They listed their destination to be 689 33rd Street in Oakland, California, where Morris was apparently staying with an "M. Baruch". This was probably Morris and Annie Vishnek's brother-in-law Morris Barusch, who was living on 33rd Street in Oakland at that time. For more information about the Barusch's, see below.
Esther Vishnick, Annie and Morris' eldest daughter, was probably born in Poland on April 2, in 1889 or 1890. She married Fred Phillips, who was a tailor, about 1907. Fred was born in Poland about 1887. Fred and Esther had two daughters in California. Their daughter Anne Phillips, who was born in 1908, married William Seches and their daughter Natalie Phillips, who was born in 1913, married Jack Forman. Both couples had children who married and had families. Fred Phillips passed away on November 17, 1950, and Esther Phillips passed away about 36 years later on September 4, 1986.
Rachel Vishnick, according to the 1901 British Census and the November 1906 passenger list mentioned above, was born about 1890 in either Russia or England, and was a "tailoress". She is said to have married a Linden or Lindon, and to have passed away in Oakland, California during the flu epidemic of 1919. If you are a descendant of Rachel Vishnek, please get in touch with us.
Annie and Morris' daughter, Jane Vishnek, was born in London, England in 1895. In 1921, she married Sam Willinger, who listed himself in the 1930 Census as a "junk merchant", and who was born about 1897 in Connecticut. They had one son, Marvin, on July 24, 1922. Jane Willinger passed away in 1927, when Marvin was about five years old, and her husband Sam Willinger passed away on September 23, 1961.
Jane and Samuel Willinger's son, Marvin Raymond Willinger, married Janice Josephson, who was born on November 3, 1921. They had four children, and Marvin and Janice were divorced in the early 1950's. Janice Willinger passed away on May 20, 1987 in Oregon, and Marvin passed away on April 15, 1991 in Washington state.
Jane's sister, Sarah Vishnek, was born in Whitechapel, England in 1897. She married Alphonse Levy about 1917. He was a wholesale clothing salesman who was born in California about 1896. They had two sons in California before Alphonse passed away somewhere between 1924 and 1930. Sarah Levy married Leroy Adams sometime after 1930, and passed away on August 26, 1963.
Meyer Vishnick, an insurance broker who went by the name of Meyer Lightner, and also went by Morris, was born in England on February 5, 1902. In about 1923, he married Annie Lustig, who was a daughter of Jacob and Fannie Lustig and born in New Jersey about 1902. They had two children in Oakland, California. Meyer Vishnek passed away in Oakland, California on June 15, 1983, and his wife Annie Vishnek passed away in Oakland in October 1981.
Bessie Perel Vishnick was born to Morris and Annie on June 4, 1904 in England. She married Milton Lustig about 1921. He was a son of George and Anna Lustig and was born in Troy, New York on July 7, 1899. Milton was a cousin of Bessie's brother Meyer's wife, Annie Lustig. The first child of Bessie and Milton was a daughter, Beverly Ruth Lustig, who was born on July 28, 1926, passed away in infancy. Their son Gerald Alan Lustig, who was born on October 25, 1929, married and had a family before he passed away on April 4, 1988. Bessie Lustig's husband Milton Lustig passed away on April 26, 1964, and Bessie passed away on April 22, 1998.
