FREE ONLINE UNITED STATES BIRTH INDEXES AND RECORDS

Our free birth records information pages for the United States consist of partial listings of free online resources for finding birth records for the United States. Some of the webpages are government or library sites, while others are sponsored by religious or genealogy groups. Some sites, such as the Mormon (LDS) Family History resources and a few government sites, allow their visitors to view and download certificates for free. But, in most cases, you will need to order copies of birth certificates from the appropriate county, state, or national government office. If you decide to pay for the vital records you need, you might wish to read our page which lists basic ways to save money and where to go when ordering vital records.

Many genealogy societies as well as governments and other organizations and groups are in the process of digitizing vital records, and their online databases are incomplete. That is because, rather than wait until all records have been indexed, they put the records indexed thus far online. So if you do not find what you want to find at a particular site, do check back periodically to see if the records you are really interested in have been added to the database.

Many of these sites also allow you to search for marriages and deaths as well, but this page will only discuss birth indices, birth certificates, and baptismal records.

If you do not find what you need at the free sites listed below for states Alabama through Montana, or on our page for states Nebraska thru Wyoming, check out our discussions about other general birth records resources on our main Birth Records Page. You may want to also search the Rootsweb Mailing Lists Archiver to see if anyone has transcribed newspaper birth announcements for the area you are interested in. There are "Old News" mailing lists for each state, and you might want to narrow your search to the list for your particular state.

You also may want to search the USGenWeb projects pages for your particular state to see if there are any more birth transcription projects online or in process. For more complete, up to date lists of birth and baptismal databases for the United States at FamilySearch, see the Family Search Menu for the United States. If the Family Search menu does not display for you, or you encounter problems using their updated site, please read about the Family Search sites on our Birth Records home page for more information about the Family Search sites and how to deal with problems using them.

You may also wish to surf through the more comprehensive list of both free and paid birth and baptismal record sites on Cyndi's List. If you feel overwhelmed trying to skim long webpages such as this one or the ones at Cyndi's List, and do not know how to have your browser search for keywords on a page for you, then read this page about how to easily find a word or phrase on a page with the help of your browser's "find" option.

We have removed the direct links to FamilySearch Pilot and Search Labs search pages for the United States which were previously listed on our pages, because all those older search pages have been removed by FamilySearch. If you are unhappy with the new search, the best we can recommend is to write to them, or post a complaint. For more details, see the sections on our Birth Records home page about the Family Search sites and on our European births page about Search Labs, Pilot and Beta.

If you find, or know of, any truly free birth index or birth records webpages not listed on our pages, or find any errors or broken links, please email that information to me so we can make these pages a more useful resource for everyone.

And if you want to learn about what general kinds of other truly free genealogy resources there are which you can access from home, see our resources page.

Many of the FamilySearch databases listed below are indexes of information obtained from records which have been filmed by the LDS church but which may not yet be online. Until the records go online, films can be viewed at Family History Centers. It was previously possible to order inexpensive photocopies before the records were put online, detailed on our ordering tips page, but that service has been discontinued.

If you need official copies of birth records, most free birth record information sites also provide information about where to purchase copies of birth certificates. You can also find links for each State for where to order birth certificates from government offices, at https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/w2w.htm and at http://statearchives.us/public/.

The amount of information you will find on birth records from the United States is going to vary according to when the birth took place, whether you are looking at a birth or baptismal record, and where the birth occurred. When registration of births by the government and baptisms by churches became mandated varies by location and religion, so there is no hard and fast rule about how much information will be available in United States birth records.

Ideally, in government birth records, in addition to the date of birth and the address where the child was born, you will at least find the names of parents, and probably who delivered the baby and their address. Sometimes there will be an indication of where the parents were born and how many prior births for the mother, as well as the exact time of birth. But all of this varies by state and sometimes city or county within the state, as well as by time frame. So, to find out how much information is on a birth record without ordering one, you need to research the question for the specific location of the birth.

The amount of information in church records will also vary by religion and, in some cases, by specific time frame, church or clergyman. Again, to find out how much information is on a religious birth or baptismal record without ordering one, you need to research the question for the specific location.

DEATH RECORDS

Death indexes and records in the United States are also great resources for finding birth information for people, if you are not able to get more precise information some other way. While death record birth information is not always accurate, it may be another resource worth consulting, as death indexes, death certificates, tombstones and obituaries often have a year of birth, and sometimes exact dates and places of birth, and names of parents. Just remember that these dates and names of parents are often simply the best guesses of family members about when their loved ones were born.

Joe Beine's Death Indexes site is a wonderful resource that lists death information resources for all the states, including state death indexes which often include the departed's date of birth. Just remember, not all sites listed there are free.

An even better resource for generally precise date of birth is the Social Security Death Index. Just remember that the locations shown on this index are where the deceased Social Security Number was issued, where they are last known to live, and the location where the last benefit was paid. In most cases, people provided copies of their birth certificates to prove their date of birth, but if no certificate was available, they were allowed to provide other documents as proof, which may not have had their actual dates of birth on them. So, the birth dates in the Social Security records of immigrants and of people born before 1900 may not be the actual dates of birth, but best guesses.

US GENWEB

Searching USGenWeb Data Files

The official global search engine for the USGenWeb Project archives is located at http://usgwarchives.net/search/searcharchives.html. However, if you want to experiment with another searching approach, then you need to understand how their computer file directories have been set up.

The USGenWeb data files are organized in directories by location and type of data, and can be either browsed through or searched with a search engine. To find the births for a particular location, you must click on the location you are interested in, and then click on "Vitals", and then click on "Births" to get a list of the data files which you can open up and view by clicking on them. But that can be quite tedious, so you may want to perform a one step site search to reduce the tedium, and my detailed explanation of how to do that, along with examples, can be found by reading our page about doing a site search.

The USGenWeb Projects for most States have significant birth or baptismal record information online in their archives. The website URLs of the US GenWeb Projects supporting the data files have varied over time, but the archived data is always available whether or not the associated USGenWeb project pages are working. So, I am sending you to the archives that I know exist because we have tested the links shown on this page and have made sure that they do, indeed, contain some birth or baptismal information.

The USGenWeb Project archives have just settled into a new home, which includes a great search engine. However, in case that is not working (and it was not doing so for a long time during the transition), you can read the box to the right for step by step explanations of the easiest ways to search the archives. It may also interest you to see how the archive directories are set up.

If you prefer to browse the US Genweb birth record files by state, instead of using a search engine or drilling down through a complex directory structure, the following webpage lists USGenWeb birth record pages and their contents by state, along with providing links to paid subscription birth databases. Just remember that not all links are free at the IDreamofGenie site. Also keep in mind that newer USGenWeb records may not yet have been indexed by external sites such as the IDreamofGenie site, and you still may need to search or browse the records by using the links we have provided, in the particular state sections below, to official USGenWeb pages for each state.

http://www.idreamof.com/birth.html (includes many links to paid databases)

Click here for quick links to jump to a particular state section on our page. If you do not find USGenWeb transcriptions for a particular location listed below, that means I did not find any birth or baptismal record files for that area. If you know of any USGenWeb Archive files for areas that are not listed below, which definitely contain birth or baptismal transcriptions, then please do email us about them so they can be added to this page.
