Joseph Royal Crouch 4 (John 3, Richard 2, Richard 1) born 1790 in Richmond, Henrico County, Virginia; he married Ann Elizabeth Savage in St. John's Church on December 1, 1825 in Richmond City, Virginia, license bearing date Henrico County.[2] Joseph Royal died the 18 May 1856 in Henrico Co., VA after an altercation with an overseer he employed. The overseer was found not guilty of murder, by reason of self-defense. [6]

Smith, was acquitted in a Henrico County, VA court for the murder of his employer, J.Royal Crouch, on November 5, 1856. Crouch died a few days after the altercation between the men on May 18, 1856, when Smith cleaved him with a hoe.
