Richard Crouch 4 (John 3, Richard 2, Richard 1) born 1790 [1], married Francis Ann Leiper on March 14, 1819 in Richmond City., Virginia. He died at the home of his brother-in-law, Dr. H.W. Coleman, Sr. on August 26, 1859 in his 69th year [15] and was buried in the Shockoe Hills Cemetery, Richmond City, VA.[1] She was the daughter of Andrew Leiper [2][3][4][5][6] and Francis Trent[18][20]. Andrew Leiper was a native of Edinburg, Scotland and for many years a prominent physician of Richmond. [4] Francis Leiper was an orphan at time of marriage. In 1856 Richard Crouch lived on the N.W. Corner of 4th and Clay Street in Richmond, VA [12]

Andrew Leiper (1717-1798), who studied medicine in Philadelphia and was the preceptor of William Henry Harrison, later President of the United States. He lived at Eighteenth and Franklin streets, and is buried in St. John's Churchyard.

The name Leiper has been perpetuated in the worthy families of Crouch and Robinson, with whom his descendants intermarried.

Note in General Wilkinson's Orderly Books whereby he gave thanks to the Richmond Volunteers, War of 1812 under Captain Richard Booker dated 29th December, 1813. Under his command was one Private Richard Crouch. Is this said Richard Crouch the son of the Richard Crouch of which this page is the subject.

The Richmond Washington Volunteers under Capt. Richard Booker (1790-1853) left Richmond in July 1813, and was subsequently attached to the 20th Regiment of U.S. Infantry, which participated in the St. Lawrence Campaign. On Dec. 29, 1813, Major General James Wilkinson, commanding the Northern Army, with headquarters at Malone, N.Y., published orders expressing appreciation for the services of the Volunteers, and ordered them to march for Richmond, Va., to be discharged from the service ( Virginia Argus, Nov. 19, 1812, July 15, 1813; Niles' Weekly Register, IV, pp. 5-6; "Thanks in General Orders To The Richmond Volunteers, War of 1812," Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, II [1894], pp. 94-95; Certificate No. 11066WC, Mrs. Selena Booker, Pension Files, National Archives, Record Group No. 15).
Is the above Richard Crouch the same one who's listed as a Private under Captain Booker of the Richmond Volunteers who were given leave to return to the capital of Virginia from service in the north on 29th December 1813.

Andrew Leiper, son of Thomas Leiper (Strathaven, in Clydesdale, Scotlant) and Helen Hamilton was born in 1750, a graduate of the Medical School of the University of Edneburgh; emigrated to Virginia, and practiced medicine at Richmond. Served through the Revolutionary War as a surgeon, m. Frances, dau. of Alexander Trent, of "Warehill" Chesterfield Co., VA. and died, October 17, 1798 of yellow fever contracted while attending a sailor in the hold of a vessel in Richmond Harbour, and is buried in St. John's Churchyard under a handsome tombstone erected by his wife. Issue: Andreweta Hamilton Leiper who married Dr. George Williamson and Francis Ann Leiper who married Richard Crouch.
