S. Finley Mitchell Mary Elizabeth Lynebaugh

Samuel Findley Mitchell was born May 7, 1806 in Mitchellville, Mercer County (now Washington County), Kentucky, the son of James Mitchell.

According to a story passed down in the family Nancy Hanks, the mother of Abraham Lincoln, lived in the James Mitchell home when Findley Mitchell was born. The Mitchell's helped her get her cloths together for her wedding to Thomas Lincoln and prevailed on her to postpone her wedding a few months until the child (Findley) was born.

In 1841 Findley moved to Missouri with his father and then back to Montgomery County, Tennessee before the 1850 U.S. Census. In 1859 and purchased about one hundred acres from Robert Shanklin estate where he built a Greek revival mansion.

In 1835 James Mitchell died. He left his home, and 150 acres to his son Samuel. Samuel married Mary Linebaugh in 1841, that same year he sold his portion of his inheritance to his brother, Robert B. Mitchell and moved west. It is believed that he made his home in Missouri for the next eighteen years. He returned to Robertson County in 1859, purchasing ninety-three acres of land from the estate of Robert Shanklin, where he built his home. Scattered throughout the front lawn are several aging pecan trees planted by Samuel. According to family tradition he brought the twigs in his saddlebags from Missouri to plant at his new home.

While the text above states that S.F.Mitchell resided in Missouri for the eighteen years between 1841 and his return to Robertson County, TN in 1859, the U.S. Census Records for 1850 [3] and 1860 [4] shows him residing in Montgomery County, TN.

[8] Robertson County - Private Acts primarily to adjust boundary lines between counties such that a farm located at a county line was wholly within one county in lieu of being in two counties.

Acts of 1869-70, Chapter 32, rearranged the boundary line between Robertson County and Montgomery County so as to place wholly within Robertson County the homes and farms belonging to E. L. Fort, Robert Long, H. G. Long, Harding Durham, A. M. Jones, C. M. Warfield, S. F. Mitchell, John Sadler, and J. E. Hill.

[12] Daily Tobacco Leaf Chronicle (Clarksville, TN) April 13, 1892

We paid a visit to the family of Mr. S.F. Mitchell - a most delightful retreat from the bustle of the city.  It was pleasant to view the broad acres of green wheat and grass, and hear the cheerful notes of the mocking birds, where they are plentiful.  Mr. Mitchell is now eighty-four years of age, and no youngster beats him getting around.  He is a regular hustler; cuts and splits wood and kicks the mules around for pastime.  He keeps a fat horse on which to gallop over the farm and to Sadlersville every day for his mail.
