Louisa Co. VA. Reuben Smith parentage:

yDNA Haplogroup I-P37-4 Reuben Smith < George Smith < David Smith ?

To: Index Contact: Joe Crouch

In early 1720-1790 Hanover and Louisa Counties VA there were at least three different Smith yDNA lines, which included three George Smith's  There were also at least two different George Smith's of a different yDNA lines in Orange County and it's parent county Spotsylvania with two being father and son, and a nephew of the father also named George Smith who also had a son named Reuben Smith.  So there were at least 6 George Smith's and two Reuben Smiths in the four counties.  The Reuben Smith of Orange County, VA married Mildred Glassell in 1796 Orange Co. VA. with no known relation to the Rueben Smith who married Elizabeth Duke.

The below Louisa County, VA marriage record for Reuben Smith and Elizabeth Duke suggests Reuben Smith was related to William Smith, Ann Smith, George Smith Jr. and George Smith Sr. as they witnessed the Louisa county, VA. marriage bond.  The Spotsylvania, Orange County, and Louisa County, VA. records below attemp to trace the various George Smiths .

Louisa Co. marriage bond dated 10 Dec. 1792 shows Reuben Smith marrying Elizabeth Duke, 21 years of age. Surety was Richard K. Tyler. Witnesses were William Smith, Ann Smith, George Smith, Jr., and George Smith, Sr.  (FamilySearch)

9 Sep 1797 deposition of Reuben Smith, page 30 of the 1800 Louisa Co., VA. Chancery court regarding the estate settlement of Clevear Duke's grandchildren.[1]

1797 Deposition of Reuben Smith

The book Henry Duke, Councilor: His Descendants and Connections, published by The Dietz Press, Inc., in 1949, Walter Garland Duke lists the children of John Duke and Elizabeth Burnley, suggests that Reuben Smith was originally of Spotsylvania County, VA., but no records proving origins.

Among them are ...

"Elizabeth Duke married December 18, 1792, Reuben Smith, of Spotsylvania, Va. After his death (about 1823) she moved to Kentucky and died between 1843 and 1851."

Referenced in the 1798 will of Elizabeth (Burnley) Duke is the following, that also shows William Smith, a probable brother who married Ann Duke.

Elizabeth (Burnley) Duke will

The above Louisa County Reuben Smith & Elizabeth Duke marriage record and the followup reference from the book Henry Duke, Councilor: His Descendants and Connections point to Spotsylvania Co., VA as the Smith's origin,  but I've found too much information in this book is based upon peoples undocumented trees and oral history passed down through various families.

The records below reference Louisa and Hanover Counties Virginia.  Orange was formed from Spotsylvania in 1734. The map below shows the positional relationship of each.  Of note are the Orange Co., VA records that specifically reference George Smith the younger, George Smith Junr and George Smith Sr. just like the above 1792 Louisa Co., VA marriage record for Reuben Smith and Elizabeth Duke.  But there is also a George Smith Sr. & George Smith Jr. in the Hanover Co., VA tax records between 1792 and 1794.  From 1794 through 1800 Reuben Smith appears in the Louisa Co., VA Personal Property Tax lists.

The question the above record asks is why was only one Smith of Hanoer County listed as being in St. Martins Parish?  Does that affect the others being related to David Smith?

1778 David Smith will signatures

The George Lumsden in David Smith’s will may be the one born abt. 1730-1785 but it’s possible it’s his son George Lumsden who married 15 May 1773 Louisa VA Elizabeth Duke, daughter of Marston Duke, Jr. aka Marrey Duke, brother to Clevears Duke 1717-1784. It was Clevears Dukes son John Dukes whose daughters Elizabeth married Rueben Smith and Ann Duke married William Smith, sons of George Smith.

Ancestry DNA tests by five siblings, descendants of George Smith's son Reuben Smith show 9.8 to 10.7 cM of shared DNA to the children of David Smith who died in 1778 Louisa Co., VA. David Smith's children (David Jr., Gullielmus, Nathan & Virginia Elizabeth) showed between 8 and 13 cM of matching DNA at the 6th g-grandfather range back to the David Smith who died in 1778 Louisa County, VA.
