William Smith was a seventeen year old kid (not 19 as the enlistment says) who stood 5' 11 3/4" - tall for those days. He grew and ended up 6' 2" - big man. In the information received were two documents that will be of interest. 1) A letter from the Law Offices of Edgar A. Maher, 96 Monroe Ave. N. W., Grand Rapids, Mich.; Citizens Telephone 5020; and dated February 28, 1918. The letter is to the Commissioner of Pensions, Washington, D.C. The letter states that William Smith died on September 23, 1917 in Grand Rapids and that a Simeon C. Van Wert had been appointed the Special Administrator of the estate. The letter went on to inquire about what needed to be done to collect accrued and unpaid pension money. The letter was stamped received by the Finance Division on March 4, 1918. 2) A letter from Thos. Crofts, Sec & Tres. of the 3rd O.V.V. Cavalry Memorial Association, R.F.D. No. 6, Toledo, O.; dated July 12, 1918. The letter was addressed to Hon. G.M. Saltzgaber, Commissioner of Pensions, Washington, DC. It was received by the Finance Division on July 15, 1918. I'll quote the entire letter: "Dear Comrade, - Your list of deceased 3rd O.V.V.C. members has been received, for which accept thanks. We observe that the name of William Smith Co. C is not on your list. Notice that he died Sept. 23, 1917, at Grand Rapids, Ohio, was sent me. Thanking you again for your list, and hoping to see you at the reunion at Bowling Green, Aug. 21, I remain, Fraternally yours, Thos. Crofts. Secy." Other officers as listed on the letterhead were: Theo. Alexander, Pres. R. H. Benfer, 1st Vice Pres. Samuel Currie, 2nd Vice Pres. G. Finkbeiner, 3rd Vice Pres. There is an error in Mr. Crofts' letter it is Grand Rapids, Michigan not Ohio. This is the William Smith who enlisted on August 26, 1861 at Toledo, Ohio for a period of three years. I believe he is listed as a Corporal but was honorably discharged as a Private in Columbia, Tennessee on October 3, 1864. His age was listed as nineteen but his actual date of birth was October 20, 1843 making him 17 at enlistment. His brother Thomas H. Smith enlisted on the same day, same Co. C 3rd Ohio Vol. Cav.
