Edwin W. Niver, son of John B. and Sarah A. Niver; was born near Centerton, Huron-co., Ohio, November 6, 1844. He enlisted October 1, 1861, in the 3d 0. V C., Company I, when not quite seventeen years old. He died at Andersonville, Georgia, Gonfederate prison, June 19th, 1864. The 3d 0 V. C. encamped near Monroeville. Well do I remember in January, 1862, when the regiment in companies passed through Greenfield, Huron-co., Ohio, en route foi the Southland. It was a sad, yet grand sight-horses' prancing, the winter day cold, but sun shining. The good people were ready with a bountiful lunch. They did not dismount. At last, all too soon, the order was given to march. With many a hand-shake and God bless you, they passed from sight, amid the weeping of mothers, wives, sisters. and friends, with the air of Dixie wafted back to them. Passed from sight, some never to return, some to die of sickness, some of wounds in hospitals, some on the battlefield, some in prisons. They passed the first night in Shelby, from there to Camp Dennison, fifteen miles north of Cincinnati Were in camp there about six weeks; from there to Jeffers6nville, Indiana, remained there about six weeks; from there to the South where active service began.
