William Matson Frederick was born in Marion Co. Alabama on August 14 1838. He settled just north of his fathers place (John Matson Frederick). This location is what was known as Chalk Bluff at that time. In 1859 he married Adaline Tyra. Family story has it, Adaline was a Creek Indian. The storm of war was brewing and it caught up with the Fredericks in 1862. As the story goes, William was out plowing one day and someone told him there were some southerners(?) coming to get him. William replied that if they get him, they would get him fightin' for the yankees. He hung the traces over the mule-mare, then went on to the house. What William's reasons for his decesion I do not know. It must have been very hard on both William and Adaline. I would like to know more about Adaline and her time during this period. William left with George Kennedy (relitive or neighbor?) and traveled at night to reach Tuscumbia. The Union army occupied Tuscumbia at this time. William and George joined the 3rd Ohio Cav Co. A on June 29th 1862. During the next 3 years William would be attached to the 3rd Ohio and would travel with his regmt. through Ala, Tenn, Ky, and Ga. William would make corporal in Dec 64. William had not been home or heard from his family scence he left in 62 but finaly in Feb 65 he got a 20 day furlogh and was able to see his family. This was at the time Wilson was about to take his command south into Alabama. While moving through Alabama, the Frederick household had Co. A of the 3rd Ohio as overnight guest. William joined his remgt on the movement on to Selma. On June 17, 1865 William was mustered out of "cervise". William's brothers left Marion Co. in 1862 to join the Confederate service. They left Marion Co. and were not heard from again. They are not listed under any Alabama regmts. I would like to know the background to this story. William lived the rest of his life in Marion Co. He developed reamatism and arthritis in his later life; this may be due to the illnesses he had during the war. William died July 17 1900. He is buried next to Adaline (she died in Apl of that same year) in the Lower Hackleburg Cem.
