Albert Theodore Thoma (-1G)
*Marks my direct-line ancestors. The (-1G), etc., after the names indicated the number of generations before Erven Thoma. His parents were married in 1904. Born before Albert was his only brother Emil Otto Thoma (-1G), on 11 Dec. 1906.
The 1913 St. Louis Directory shows his father, Emil Thoma, cabmkr, living at 4403a Virginia Ave. A duplicate 1913 entry shows his father , Emil E. Thoma, cabmkr, living at 3125 Meramec, so they must have moved during that canvassing for the Directory entries. The 1915 St. Louis City Directory lists his father, cabinetmaker, living at 440_a Virginia Ave.
The 1916 and 1917 St. Louis Directories show Emil Thoma, cabmkr. (cabinetmaker), living at 4657 Idaho Ave. In 1917-18 Albert and siblings were attending Neosha elementary school (south St. Louis) in portable/temporary facilities. The 1918 Directory shows his father, Emil Thoma, cabtmkr., living at 4657 Idaho Ave The 1920 Fed. Census for Missouri (vol. 98, enum. district 250, sheet 5, line 42) shows him living with his parents and siblings at 4657 Idaho Ave. St. Louis, Mo. Albert is 8. His father is 44, born in 1874 in Germany, citizenship in 1900. His mother is 42, born in Germany, naturalized. Albert's brother Emil is 13. His twin sister, Alberta, is also 8. There is a separate listing for an Albert in the 1922 Directory. He is a salesman for Pevely Daily Co. and is living at 6420 Idaho. But the father, Emil Thoma, cabinetmaker, is living at 4624 Virginia Ave. Since our Albert would be only 10 years old in 1922 I believe the salesman at Pevely is a different person than our Albert.
The Directory of 1925 shows Emil Thoma, cabtmkr., living at 3210 Osceola. In the 1926 City Directory, his father Emil, cabinetmaker, is living at 3210 Osceola. Albert's brother Emil has a separate listing as carpenter at that address. In the same year we find a separate listing for the other Albert who is the salesman at Bevel Dairy living on Salena. The 1927 Directory has Emil Thoma living at 3210 Osceola (no occupation). The 1929 City Directory has two listings for Albert. One is a driver living at 8423 Minnesota Ave. The other is a chauffeur living at 1903 and a half Wright. Our Albert would have been only ca. 17 in 1929. Since Albert was living with his parents in 1930 (see below), the two Albert listings in the 1929 Directory must be different persons. The 1930 Directory lists the father, Emil as a cabinetmaker, living at 3110 Osceola. Brother Emil Otto has a separate listing as a carpenter at the same address. Alberta (or Albert?) has a separate listing in 1930 as a clerk for Wolff-Wilson D. Co., living at 3110 Osceola. The 1930 Fed. Census for Missouri (T626_1233, enum. dist. 432, supv. dist. 9, page 17B, lines 69-73, house #253, family #389) shows Albert and his family at 3210 Osceola St. in St. Louis (city) (ward 11, block 2699). The father, Emil, is 54 years old, born in Germany, parents also born in Germany. He immigrated in 1893 [actually the last days of 1892] and has the naturalization status of "Na". German was his native tongue. His occupation is listed as cabinet maker at a fixture co. but he is not presently working. He is not in school but can read, write, and speak English. He was married at age 30. He was not a war veteran. He and his wife are renting at $30 per month and own a radio set. Albert's mother, Adeline, is 53 years old, born in Germany, her parents also born in Germany. 1881 was given as her year of immigration [really 1880] and her naturalization status as "Na". German was her native tongue. She can read, write, and speak English, but is not in school. No occupation is given for her. Albert's brother, Emil, is 23, born in Missouri, his parents born in Germany. Hi is single, is not in school but reads, writes, and speaks English. His occupation is carpenter in the house trade and his is presently employed. Albert and Alberta are both 18, born in Missouri, their parents born in Germany. They are not in school but read, write and speak English. They have no occupation and are both single. The 1931 Directory lists Albert, plasterer, living at 3210 Osceola. His father and sister are listed separately. The 1932 Directory lists Albert as a plasterer, living at 3210 Osceola. His sister, brother and father are all listed separately. The 1935 Directory lists his future wife as a press feeder at Ralston Purina Co. living at 4400 S. Broadway. His S.S. number is 494-03-3835, issued 14 Dec. 1936 in Missouri. At this time he is living at 4163 South Compton Ave. in St. Louis. He is working for Arthur Niebuhr at 4009 Bergen in St. Louis. His father (with Adeline) is listed in the 1937 St. Louis Directory. He is a cabinet maker, living at 4163 S. Compton Ave. The 1937 St. Louis Directory lists Albert Thoma, plasterer, living at 4163 S. Compton (with his parents).
The 1939 Directory shows Albert, plasterer, living at 2837 Mount Pleasant. His wife Johanna is living with him and has a separate listing as a clerk at Ralston Purina Co. There were no children from the first marriage. A living relative said Johanna died after a brief bout with pneumonia or some other common malady on 8 Aug. 1940. However, I obtained her death certificate (No. 6726) which gives her death date as on the 6th at 5:25 A.M. from various complication after appendicitis. She died after a six day stay at the Missouri Baptist Sanitorium. At this time the address of Johanna and Albert was 2837 Mt. Pleasant Ave. in St. Louis. The names of her parents and their birth-country are given. Johanna's birth date and place are given. Her age is given as 30 years, 7 months and 15 days. Her occupation and employer are given. Albert was the informant. The funeral home was the J. H. Gebken Co. at 2842 Meramec. She was buried in Sunset Burial Park on the 8th
His first daughter, Karen Kathleen Thoma (0G) was born on 11 Jul. 1943 in St. Louis. Albert served in the U. S. Navy between 02 Aug. 1943 to 30 Oct. 1945. I remember meeting him at a dock when he returned from a tour of duty. He was a cook.
The St. Louis City Directory of 1944 shows Albert L. [sic!] Thoma (Mary E.), salesman, with a home at 8423 Minnesota Ave. At the same address we find a Robert E. Thoma who is a shipping clerk. I am not sure who he is. His second daughter, Mary Alberta Thoma (0G), was born on 01 Mar. 1947 in St. Louis. Sometime after his second marriage and before 1955, he built a home at 7121 Stafford Ct., Affton, MO. He probably worked for Theodore Winge (-2G), his uncle. He later worked for Famous-Barr Department Stores in St. Louis. His father died on 11 Dec. 1948 in St. Louis. He was cremated. His third and last child, Linda, was born on 13 Nov. 1951 in St. Louis. The St. Louis County Directory of 1955 shows Albert T. Thoma, plaster contractor, with his wife Mary, living at 7121 Stafford Ct. in Affton, MO. The County Directory of 1958 has the same information. The County Dir. of 1961 shows Albert T. Thoma, with his wife Mary E., plasterer, living at 7121 Stafford Ct. in Affton, MO.
The St. Louis County Directory of 1970 shows Albert T. Thoma, with his wife Mary E., a plasterer living at 7121 Stafford Ct. in Affton, MO. Their daughter, Mary Thoma, is also listed in this year as a student living at the same address. His mother died on 10 May 1970 in St. Louis County. The St. Louis County Dir. of 1971 shows Albert T. Thoma, with wife Mary E., a plasterer, with business and home at 7121 Stafford Ct. in Affton, MO. The 1972-73 County Dir. has the same information.
------------------------- By trade he was a plasterer. Using real plaster he sometimes mixed in sand to create a textured look; sometimes concave or convex curved surfaces were made. Some of his plaster work was artistically painted by his sister and second wife while the plaster was still wet. He did a lot of creative plastering in our house in south St. Louis County (at 9563 Yuma Dr.). His two siblings died after him: sister Alberta in 1990 and Emil in 1997. His second wife lived at the Affton home until Spring or early Summer 2002, then moved to Arizona. Two of his daughters also moved to Arizona, but one of them moved back to St. Louis County ca. 2003. The third daughter remarried ca. 2003 and is living in St. Louis (city). Albert's second wife, Mary, died on 07 Apr. 2005 in Yuma, Arizona. -------------------------------------------------- There was another Albert Thoma buried at Jefferson Barracks Natl. Cemetery. He was born 17 Nov. 1894 and died 30 Oct. 1945. He was in the Army and was a private when discharged. There are entries for him in the St. Louis Directory; he worked at Pevely Dairy. As far as I know, he is not related.
