A man named Christian Stettner and Otto's (Jr) father, Otto Thoma (Sr), took over a St. Louis brewery in 1886. They operated under the name Stettner and Thoma Weiss Beer Brewery. In 1906, they moved the brewery to 128-130 Sidney Street. In 1908, they merged with the Missouri Weiss Beer Brewing Company and operated as a branch of that concern until closing in 1913. As was typical of these brewers at the time, they only produced Weiss beer. Otto's (Jr) uncle, Leo Thoma, assisted Otto (Sr) in the brewery, as did Otto (Jr) and his brother Walter.

In the Gould's St. Louis City Directory, 1890, Otto's father and uncle Leo are listed. An address of 1503 S. 7th St. is given. Most likely that is the address where Otto Jr. was born. The 1900 Census says Otto Jr was born in 1889 but the S. S. application says 1890.
