The cemetery is named after a family and is not descriptive of an arboreal scene.
Located on the north side of County Road 500 North (one mile south
of US 224) between CR 600 West and 700 West in Adams County Indiana
(CR 700 W in Adams Co. is the same as 800 East in Wells County, which is the county
line), this small, one-half acre, cemetery of 12 short rows has the earliest burial
date of 1844 recorded on a stone and it is presumed to be still active. It is in
Section 4.
The coordinates are 40.8158804 Latitude (DEC) and -85.0663578 Longitude (DEC); or
404857N Latitude (DMS) and 0850359W Longitude (DMS). The elevation is 830 feet
(253 meters).
A chain link fence surrounds the cemetery on three sides (east, north, west). Six
large trees border the gravel county road; three on either side of
a wrought iron gateway, which is at the entrance to a grassy drive
that separates rows nine and ten.
This cemetery reading was first done in July 1998 and was
compared with the 1956 DAR reading and, in some instances, with the
relevant WPA data.
An update in 2006 added images of the gravestones.
Brief descriptions of the gravestones themselves were included prior to the addition of photos
and are retained.
This 2010 reading confirms and adds information.
Numbering of rows begins at the west side of
the cemetery and lots are numbered from the end of the row closest to
the road and counted northward.
The unique numbering system of this reading first numbers all markers starting from the southwest corner
(And will be re-numbered as gravestones are added).
The second set of six alphanumeric characters also identify each current grave marker. The two letters (sc)
stand for Shady Cemetery; the next pair of numbers represent the row and the last two digits identify the number of
stones (lot number) from the road. Following these two numbering systems, the inscription is
transcribed, and a description of the stone is recorded in brackets. Newspaper obituary notices and gravestone
photos are included.
The names of those buried are listed in a modified index at the bottom of this reading. Surnames
are listed alphabetically and individuals with the same surnames are listed by row and lot number.

NANCY M. HOWER DIES AT BLUFFTON Former Adams County Resident Dies Today At Age Of 82 Years
Bluffton, March 30-- Mrs. Nancy M. Hower, aged 82, a former Adams
county resident, died at the home of her daughter Mrs. Rosie Schrank,
328 East Horton street, this city at 8:30 o'clock this morning.
Death was due to paralysis after an illness of more than three years.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the
First Reformed church of Bluffton and burial will be made at the Shady
cemetery near Magley.
Mrs. Hower has several relatives in Decatur and is well known in
Adams and Wells county, being a pioneer of this part of Indiana.

Mrs. Nancy A. Hower, 82 years old, died of paralysis this morning at 8:30

Mrs. Hower was born in Adams County, a daughter of Samuel Steele
and Mrs. Susan Worley Steele, on November 22, 1842. Her husband is ________
Surviving her are the following children: Mrs. Amos Crist, Fort Wayne;
J. U. Hower, Muncie; Mrs. Schrank, Bluffton, and Mrs. Ida B. Barnett,
Bluffton. One son is deceased. There are six grandchildren and seven
great grandchildren.
Three brothers and a sister who survive are George Steele, Tocsin;
James Steele, Magley; Robert Steele, Convoy, Ohio, and Mrs. Martha Jane
Watkin, Tocsin.
Mrs. Hower was a member of the First Reformed church.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at
the First Reformed church, in charge of Rev. W. A. Alspach. Burial will be
made at the Shady cemetery near Magley.

SAMUEL STEELE (deceased), who was one of the old and prominent pioneers of Adams County, was born in Pennsylvania,
and subsequently removed to Ohio with his parents, they locating near Wooster. He was married in Ohio, to Miss Susannah Worley,
who was a native of that State, and of Scotch descent, Mr. Steele being of German origin. To this union were born nine children,
six sons and three daughters. In March, 1838, Mr. Steele settled in Adams County, Indiana, on section 9, Kirkland Township,
where he lived till his death, which occurred about the year 1858. When he first settled in the county everything was in a state of nature,
and here he and his family experienced many of the hardships and privations incident to pioneer life. His first dwelling was a rude cabin
which he erected, with puncheon floor and clapboard roof. Mr. Steele took an active part in the affairs of his township, and was a
member of the board of trustees under the old organization, besides holding other local offices. During his life he was much interested
in agriculture and fruit-growing, and was one of the principal actors at the first agricultural fair held in Adams County. Politically
he was a Democrat. Religiously he was a Presbyterian till his death.

Samuel Shady a resident of Magley, died Saturday night at ten o'clock.
He had suffered a stroke of paralysis and his death was due to that and old
age. He was almost eighty years of age. The funeral occurred Tuesday
at ten o'clock from the Pleasant Valley church.

Rebecca Jane Shady died in Lancaster township, Wells county, Indiana,
December 23rd, 1877, aged 40 years, 10 months and 10 days. She
was born in Knox county, Ohio, and while yet in her infancy her father
emigrated to Indiana, where she was married May 11th, 1855, to Samuel
Shady. She experienced religion about seven years ago, and has lived
a faithful and devoted Christian until her death. She was a member of
the United Brethren church. She was sick only a short time until her
Savior called her home. She was a good wife and mother, and a good
and kind neighbor. She leaves an aged mother, a husband and 8 children
to mourn their loss, which is her gain. The youngest child [Clara Belle Shady Bender
(11 Apr 1877 - 21 Dec 1965] is but 9
months old. She was loved by all who knew her. She leaves a large
circle of relatives and acquaintances. May God bring all together again.
That lump of clay lies in the grave;
The soul has gone to Him that saves
All who believe in God and Son
Shall meet her in her happy home.

John Henry Bauer, 64, of Magley, died Thursday evening at 6:25
at the home of his son, Francis, near Van Wert, Ohio. Death was
the result of a stroke of paralysis.
The deceased was born April 25, 1872, a son of Peter and Elizabeth
Snurr Bauer of Ashland county, Ohio. He moved to this county
with his parents at the age of eight years and remained her the
rest of his life. He married Dora Shady, who preceded him in death
35 years ago. He was a member of the Pleasant Valley M. E.
church.
Survivors are: a son, Francis Bauer of near Van Wert; a daughter,
Mrs. Hattie Worthman of Kirkland township; a brother,
Harry Bauer of Preble; a sister, Mrs. Blanche Likely of Akron, O.,
and ten grandchildren. One son, two brothers and one sister preceded
him in death.
Funeral services will be held at the Black funeral home Sunday
afternoon at 1:30 o'clock with burial in the Shady cemetery near
Magley. The body may be viewed at the Black funeral home until
time for burial.

John Henry Bauer, 64, of Magley, died Thursday night at the home of

AGED RESIDENT OF MAGLEY DEAD Peter Bauer, Age 83 Years, Died at His Home Late Last Night
Peter Bauer, age 83 years, died at his home in Magley, at 11 o'clock last
night. Mr. Bauer was a well-known resident of Adams county and the
news of his death grieved his many friends.
Mr. Bauer was born in Luxenberg (sic), Germany on February 9, 1839. He
came to America when he was twenty-five years old and has resided in this
community for more than thirty years. On November 9, 1871 he was united in
marriage to Miss Elizabeth Sneer (sic), of Perrysville, Ohio. To th[i]s union were
born six children, four of whom are living. The surviving children are
John and Harry Bauer, of Magley; Charles Bauer, of Omaha, Nebraska;
and Blanche Likely, of Akron, Ohio. One son and one daughter, William
and Susie, preceeded their father in death.
In addition to the wife and four children, the deceased is survived by
five grandchildren, namely: Mrs. Hattie Worthman, Frank Bauer, Theodore
Bauer, Roy Bauer, and Margaret Likely. Idabelle and Ethel Bauer are
great-grandchildren. Mr. Bauer was a member of the Methodist church.
Funeral services will be held from the Little Vine church at 2 o'clock
Sunday afternoon, the Rev. J. K. Wyant, officiating. Short services will
be held from the residence at 1:30 o'clock.

DEATH CLAIMS MAGLEY WOMAN Mrs. Elizabeth Bauer Died Tuesday Night of Heart Trouble
Mrs. Elizabeth Bauer, 81, a resident of Magley for the last 40
years, died at her home Tuesday night at 7 o'clock of heart trouble.
Mrs. Bauer had been in her usual good health and had worked about
her home during the day.
She was born in Ashland County Ohio, June 20, 1853, a daughter of
Henry and Suzanna Snur. Her marriage to Peter Bauer took place
in 1871 and he preceded her in death.
Surviving are the following children, John H. Bauer, at home;
Harry Bauer at Preble and Blanche Likely of Sharon Center, Ohio. Two
children died in infancy and a son, Charles Bauer, died last May.
Mrs. Bauer was the last surviving member of a family of 10
children. Six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren survive.
Funeral services will be held at the home in Magley Thursday
afternoon at two-thirty o'clock and burial will be made in the Shady
cemetery. Friends are asked to omit flowers.
The body will be returned to the home from the S. E. Black funeral
home this evening.

at her home Tuesday evening. She had worked about her home as
usual during the day. Her death was sudden.

Mrs. Henry Snur. Her marriage to Peter Bauer took place in 1871. She
had been a resident of Magley 40 years. Her husband preceded her in
death.

Miss Cora Ernest Is Taken By Death
Miss Cora Ernest, 76, of Decatur, died at 10:40 o'clock Sunday
morning at the South View rest home in Bluffton, where she had
resided the past six months. Death was attributed to complications.
She was born at Mooney Sept. 21, 1883, a daughter of Martin
and Mary Diehl-Ernest, and had never married. She lived for a
number of years in the Floyd Barger home in Kirkland township.
Miss Ernest attended the Craigville United Brethren church.
There are no near surviving relatives.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Gillig
& Doan funeral home, the Rev. John D. Mishler officiating. Burial
will be in the Shady cemetery in Kirkland township. Friends
may call at the funeral home after 4 p.m. today until time of
the services.

DIED AT ELKHART Jos. Shady, Well Known Indiana Pioneer, Died Saturday at Home of Son MR. MARTIN SHADY Was Eighty-Seven Years of Age--Body Brought Here Today.
Joseph Shady, who, had he lived until next June, would have been
eighty-seven years of age, died Saturday afternoon at the home of his
son, Martin Shady, at Elkhart, where he had gone August 4, to visit.
At that time he was in apparently good health, but was unexpectedly
stricken with bladder trouble, for which he underwent two operations,
with only temporary relief.
The body will be brought here this afternoon and will be taken to the
home of a daughter, Mrs. Martin Beery, on West Monroe street, where
it will lie until Tuesday afternoon at one o'clock, when the procession will
leave for the Little Vine church, nine miles west of this city, where
the services will be held. Burial will be in the Shady cemetery. The body
may be seen by friends at the home here until the time of leaving for the
funeral.
Mr. Shady was a native of Fairfield county, Ohio. He was born
June, 1830, the son of William and Susannah Shady. At the age of nine
years he came with his parents to Indiana, settling in Wells county.
The remainder of his life was spent in this vicinity. Since the death of
his wife, formerly Miss Elizabeth Mills, twelve years ago, he had made
his home with his children in turn.
The children surviving are: Mrs. Martin Beery, this city; Marion F.
Shady, Fenton, Mich.; Mrs. Israel Rex, Sturgis, Mich.; Martin Shady,
Elkhart; George, McMillen, Mich. Two, Ed, who died twenty-four years
ago, in manhood, and Josephine, in infancy.
Brothers are William and Martin Shady of Wells county.
The deceased was a member of the United Brethren church, a faithful and
devout Christian man, highly esteemed.
The children were all at his bedside at various time during his illness
and everything possible was done for his comfort. A granddaughter, Mrs.
C. H. Colter, of this city, was also at his bedside when he passed away.

The funeral of Joseph Shady, former Wells county man, was held this
afternoon at the Little Vine church. Burial was made in the Shady cemetery.
Mr. Shady was a native of Fairfield county, Ohio. He was born in
June, 1839, the son of William and Susannah Shady, and at the age of
nine years he came with his parents to Wells county. Since the death of
his wife, formerly Miss Elizabeth Mills, twelve years ago, he had made
his home with his children. William and Martin Shady, brothers, live in
this county.

Joseph Shady, aged 86, for many years a resident of Adams County,
southeast of Tocsin, who has many relatives in this county, passed away
Sunday at the home of a son, Martin Shady, at Elkhart, Ind., where he
contracted his fatal illness while on a visit with two sons residing in that
city.
He left the home of a daughter, Mrs. Martin Beery, in Decatur, several
weeks ago for a visit in Elkhart, and it was soon after his arrival there that
he became ill with kidney trouble and complications. He underwent two
operations for the trouble and for a time seemed to be improving, but recently
had a relapse, and declined rapidly. Relatives in Wells and Adams Counties
received messages Saturday announcing that he was dying.
Mr. Shady, the decedent, was a native of Ohio, a son of Mr. and Mrs.
William Shady. He was a boy when they moved to Adams County and settled
on a farm southeast of Tocsin, where he grew to manhood. He was
held in highest esteem in the community. Surviving him are three sons and
two daughters, namely Martin and Marion Shady, of Elkhart, George
Shady, residing in Michigan, and Mrs. Martin Beery and Mrs. Israel Rex, of
Decatur. He also is survived by two brothers, William Shady, who resides
with his daughter, Mrs. Robert Stewart, northeast of Bluffton in Lancaster
township, and Martin Shady, who lives on a farm 1 1/2 miles north of
Craigville. Mr. Shady's wife passed away about fifteen years ago.
The body was brought from Elkhart today, to the home of a daughter, Mrs.
Beery, at Decatur, and the funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon
at 2 o'clock, at the Pleasant Valley church, one mile south and one
mile east of Tocsin. Burial will be in the Shady Cemetery, on the old Shady
home farm where the decedent was raised.

in this city, she being one of the pioneer residents of that part of the

The funeral will be held at the home tomorrow at ten o'clock and the

Kenneth Duane Call, three-weeks-old son of Mr. and Mrs.
Emery Call, east of Tocsin, died Sunday at the Riley hospital in
Indianapolis where he had been a patient for treatment for the past
two weeks.
Born Aug. 31, 1938 at the home near Tocsin, the decedent was the
son of Emery L. and Esther Morningstar Call.
Surviving besides the parents are four brothers, Bobby, Donald,
Harold, and Roger, and one sister, Mary Ellen; the paternal grand-parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Call, of Craigville; and the maternal grand-parents,
Mr. and Mrs. B. H. Morningstar, of Geneva.
The body will be taken from Indianapolis to the Elzey funeral home
at Ossian today and will then be taken to the home of the parents
on Tuesday.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Pleasant
Valley M. E. church, southeast of Tocsin, with Rev. A. S. Elzey in charge.
Burial will be in the Shady cemetery.

EMERY L. CALL DIES SUNDAY Young Decatur Man Dies Sunday of Spinal Meningitis
Emery Logan Call, 31, who resided at the west edge of Decatur, died
at the Adams county memorial hospital at 6:30 p. m. Sunday after a
week's illness of spinal meningitis.
The deceased was born in Wells county February 15, 1908, the son
of Joseph and Alice Call, who reside near Craigville. He was an
employe of the Central Soya company and a member of the Loyal
Order of Moose.
He had lived here for the past six months, moving from his home
near Ossian.
Surviving besides the parents are the widow, Esther; five children
Roby Wayne, Donald, Mary Ellen, Roger and Harold all at home; and
the following brothers and sisters: Alles (sic) Call, Craigville; Elton Call,
Huntington; Edward Call, Bluffton; Mrs. Edith Kramer, Huntington;
Woodrow and Enos Call, at home. One son, Kenneth, is deceased.
Funeral services will be held at the home at 2 o'clock Wednesday
afternoon, with Rev. R. W. Graham officiating. Burial will be in the
Shady cemetery, two and one-half miles west of Peterson.
The body will be returned to the residence Tuesday morning from
the Gillig and Doan funeral home, and may be viewed at the residence
until time of the funeral.

Joseph W. Call, 88, a resident of Wells county for 75 years, died
at 5:20 p.m. Thursday at his home on Craigville route 1 following

Born in Huntington county Dec. 22, 1873, he was a son of John
J. and Nancy Jane Dewill-Call, and was married to Alberta
Vaughn Aug. 19, 1897.
Mr. Call attended the Pleasant Valley church.
Surviving in addition to his wife are five sons, Ellis and Earl
W. Call, both of Decatur, Elton V. Call of Indianapolis, Edward
L. Call of Bluffton, and Enos P. Call of Big Lake; one daughter,
Mrs. Forest (Edith) Kramer of Huntington; 26 grandchildren; 43
great-grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. Joe Sovine of Craigville
route 1. One son, three brothers and two sisters are
deceased.

Pleasant Valley church, the Rev. Homer Studebaker officiating,

Joseph Call of Craigville Dies
Joseph W. Call, 88, of Craigville Route 1 died at 5:20 p.m. Thursday
at his home following an extended illness. Death was due to a heart
condition.
A native of Huntington County, Mr. Call was born Dec. 22, 1873,
the son of John J. and Nancy Jane Dewitt Call. His marriage to Alberta
Vaughn, who survives, took place Aug. 19, 1897 in Wells County.
Mr. Call, a retired farmer, was a member of the Pleasant Valley
Church. He had resided in Wells County 75 years.
Surviving, in addition to the wife, are five sons, Ellis and Earl W.,
both of Decatur, Elton V. of Indianapolis, Edward J. (Pete) [buried in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Ossian IN] of
Bluffton and Enos P. of Big Lake; a daughter, Mrs. Forest (Edith)

Born in Wells county March 23, 1881, she was a daughter of
Turner and Anna Ward-Vaughn, and was married to Joseph W.
Call Aug. 19, 1899. Her husband preceded her in death June 25,
1962.
Mrs. Call was a member of the Pleasant Valley church.
Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Forrest Kramer of Huntington;

Earl 'Woody' Call of Decatur Dies
A brother of Edward "Pete" Call of Bluffton, Earl W.
"Woody" Call, 63, of Decatur died at 6:40 a.m. Friday at
Decatur Hospital, where he had been a patient since Aug. 1.
Born Dec. 8, 1915 in Wells County, he was a son of Joseph
and Alverta Vaughn Call. His marriage to Lucy Terrell, who
survives, took place Dec. 10, 1939.
Mr. Call was retired, due to poor health, from the Fort
Wayne Storage Co. He was a member of the Moose Lodge in
Decatur and the Eagles Lodge in Albion.
In addition to the wife and Bluffton brother, he is survived
by three sons, Vernon of Fort Wayne, Von of Willshire, O.,
and James of Decatur; one sister, Mrs. Forrest (Edith)
Kramer of Huntington; three other brothers, Ellis of Decatur,
Rev. Elton of Frankfort and Enos of Columbia City Route 3,
and six grandchildren.
Calling will be after 2 p.m. Saturday at the Zwick Funeral
Home at Decatur with services to be conducted there at 2 p.m.
Sunday by his brother, Rev. Elton Call of Frankfort.
Moose Lodge services will be held Saturday evening at the

Lucy Ann Call, 66, 1109 Bollman St., a former resident of
515 St. Mary's St. for 40 years and well-known in local bowling
circles, was found dead Wednesday evening at her residence.
She retired in 1983 from Fort Wayne GE after 12 years of
service. In recent years, she had been employed at the
Rheinlander and also did volunteer work in food
distribution for the needy of Adams County.
She was inducted into the Decatur Local Women's Bowling
Association (DLWBA) Hall of Fame last March. She served as
secretary-treasurer of the organization from 1962 through
1971 and was secretary of the Town and Country League for
many years. In 1969-1970, she rolled season highs of 269 and
658.
She was a member of the Women of the Moose, American
Legion Auxiliary, and the Eagles Lodge of Albion.
Born in Wells County on July 3, 1921, she was the daughter of
Earl and Edith Osborne-Terrell, and was married Dec. 10, 1939, to
Earl W. (Woody) Call; he died Aug. 17, 1979.
Survivors include three sons, Vernon Call, Ossian; Von Call,
Willshire, O.; James Call, Decatur; a sister, Mrs. Lillian
Morris, of near Bluffton; a brother, Harris Terrell, of near
Bluffton; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
One brother, Von Terrell, is deceased.

A sister of rural Bluffton residents Mrs. Lillian Morris and Harris
Terrell, Mrs. Lucy Ann Call, 66, died unexpectedly Wednesday
evening at her home at 1109 Bollman St., Decatur.
She retired from General Electric in Fort Wayne in 1983 after
12 years of service. She also had been an employee of The
Rhinelander in Decatur. Mrs. Morris [?] was inducted this year into
the Women's Bowling Hall of Fame. She was a member of the
Women of the Moose, the American Legion Auxiliary and the
Albion Eagles Lodge.
A past secretary of the Decatur Women's Bowling Association,
she served as a volunteer food distributor for the needy in Adams
County.
A resident of Adams County the past 40 years, she was born
July 3, 1921 in Wells County, a daughter of Earl and Edith Osborne
Terrell. Her marriage to Earl W. (Woody) Call, whose death occurred
Aug. 17, 1979, took place Dec. 10, 1939.
Also surviving are three sons, Vernon Call of Ossian, James

Enos P. "Smokey" Call, 63, route 3, Columbia City, died at
11:26 a.m. Sunday in Whitley County Memorial Hospital at
Columbia City after a two-year illness.
A Wells County native, he married the former Phyllis Irene
Good, who survives; they lived for a time in Decatur. He was a
veteran of the U.S. Navy in World War II and retired in 1987
as assistant plant manager of the Dana Corp. plant in Fort
Wayne, after a 40-year career.
Other survivors include a son, Brian Call of Columbia City;
three daughters, Mrs. John (Patricia Ann) Post of Lima,
Ohio; Mrs. Robert (Judith Kay) Madison of South Whitley; and
Mrs. Leonard (Carolyn) Morris of Columbus, Ohio; a sister,
Edith Kramer of Huntington; a brother Edward "Pete" Call of
Bluffton; and eight grandchildren.

A resident of Columbia City Route 3, Enos P. "Smokey" Call,
63, a brother of Edward "Pete" Call of Bluffton, died at 11:26

City. Ill the past two years, Mr. Call was admitted Saturday to
the hospital.
A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, Mr. Call retired in 1987
as assistant production manager of Dana Corp. in Fort Wayne
after 40 years of employment.
Born in Wells County Sept. 12, 1924, he was a son of Joseph
and Alverta Belle Bryant Call. His marriage was to Phyllis Irene
Good, who survives.

Benjamin Franklin Dinius, 73, died Sunday afternoon at his home
1339 Joe Street, in Huntington, after a serious illness since Tuesday.
He had been in failing health for a year.
Mr. Dinius was born November 28, 1857, in Jackson township,
Huntington county, to William and Elizabeth Dinius. His first marriage was
to Emma DeWitt, who died October 16, 1899.
Surviving children of the first marriage are: Mrs. Otto
Cunningham of Huntington, Mrs., Cleo Lavine of Huntington, William L.
Dinius of Fort Wayne, David Allen Dinius of Fort Wayne.
The second marriage was to Martha Lantz on May 27, 1902. The wife
and a daughter, Mrs. Neva Hart of New York City, survive.
Sisters are Mrs. Frank Jackson of Huntington, Mrs. Mary Yahne of
Roanoke, Mrs. Elizabeth Rupert of Jackson township, Clark Dinius of
Fort Wayne, is a half brother and half sisters are Mrs. Mary Pence of
Huntington, Mrs. Eva Bilger of Fort Wayne and Mrs. Alfred Draper of

The deceased was a member of the First Christian church of
Huntington where funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 1 o'clock

NANCY JANE CALL DIES EARLY SUNDAY CRAIGVILLE WOMAN HAD BEEN BEDFAST FOR THE PAST SEVEN WEEKS.
Mrs. Nancy Jane Call, aged 69 years, died at 7 o'clock Sunday morning
at her home in Craigville. She had been ailing for several months, but
was not taken bedfast until about seven weeks ago. She failed in health
rapidly during the last three weeks.
Born in Delaware county, Indiana, January 20, 1847, the daughter of
Lorenzo and Hannah DeWitt, Mary Jane Call was sixty-nine years, eight
months and four days of age at the time of her death. She was only a few
years old when her parents moved to Huntington county and was raised to
young womanhood there. It was in the year 1867 that she married John
Call, of Huntington county. They resided in that county until about
ten years ago, when they purchased a farm three miles north of Craigville.
A few years after moving to Craigville Mr. Call died, and Mrs. Call then
moved to the little town, giving the farm interests over to her son.
Mrs. Call became well known and highly respected during her few
years stay in Craigville. She was a member of the Christian Union
church.
Surviving are four sons and two daughters, who are William, of
Huntington; Joseph, residing on the home farm; Frank, of Bluffton; Noah Call,
at home; Mrs. Albert Trullender, of Bluffton, and Clara Call, at home. Two
sisters, Mrs. Malinda Purdue, of Muncie, and Mrs. Frank Swaim, of Huntington,
also survive.
The funeral service will be held 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the
Pleasant Valley church two and one-half miles north of Craigville in
charge of Rev. Marshall Gray. Burial will be in the Shady cemetery.

CALL FUNERAL TODAY. Mrs. Nancy Jane Call, Who Died Sunday, Survived by 6 Children.
This afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Pleasant Valley church, two and one-
half miles north of Craigville, was held the funeral of Mrs. Nancy Jane
Call, aged 69, who passed away Sunday morning at her home in Craigville,
after an illness of seven weeks. The funeral services were in charge
of Rev. Marshall Gray, and burial was in the Shady cemetery.
Mrs. Call, the decedent, was born in Delaware County, January 20, 1847,
a daughter of Lorenzo and Hannah DeWitt. She was a small child when
her parents moved to Huntington County, where she grew to womanhood.
She was married there in 1867 to John Call, and they resided in
Huntington County until about ten years ago, when they moved onto a
farm north of Craigville. After Mr. Call's death a few years ago his widow
moved to the little town. Surviving her are four sons and two daughters,
namely: William, of Huntington; Joseph, residing on the home farm;
Frank, of Bluffton; Noah and Clara Call, at home; and Mrs. Albert Trullender,
of Bluffton. Two sisters, Mrs. Malinda Purdue, of Muncie; and Mrs.

Ethel R. Bryan, 87, of Craigville, died at 2:30 p.m.
Sunday at Suncoast Hospital, Largo, Fla. She had been
residing with a daughter in Indian Rocks Beach, Fla., and
had been ill since suffering a stroke on December 6.
A member of the Pleasant Dale church, she was born Jan.
4, 1887 in Adams county to Martin and Sara Wolfe-Shady,
and is survived by the daughter, Mrs. Ruth Poulson (sic) of Indian
Rocks Beach; a son, Robert Bryan of Fort Wayne; one sister,
Mrs. Edith Carter (sic) of Fort Wayne; one brother Dewey
Shady of Fort Wayne; and three grandchildren.
Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Goodwin
Memorial Chapel, Bluffton, Rev. Oliver Dearing in charge. Burial
will be in Shady Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Goodwin chapel after 2 p.m.

Arta Shady, 52, of Columbus, O., former resident of Tocsin, died at
7:30 a.m. Sunday following an operation at a hospital in Columbus.
Mr. Shady was born Jan. 25, 1885, east of Tocsin to Martin and Sally
Wolfe Shady. He was married to Amelia Goldner.
Surviving are the father, of Craigville; the widow; the children,
Mrs. Carl Moyer, Lewis and Lloyd Shady, all of Columbus, O.; Mrs.
Dorothy Smith, of Grove City, O., and Delphus and Donnie, both at
home; two sisters, Mrs. Ethel Bryan and Mrs. Edith Carder, both of Fort
Wayne, and a brother, Dewey Shady, of Elkhart.
The body will be brought at 11 o'clock Tuesday to the Tocsin U. B.
church, where funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. in charge of Rev.
Charles Moore. Burial will be in the Shady cemetery, three and one-
half miles southeast of Tocsin.

DEATH CLAIMS MARTIN SHADY Former Adams County Resident Dies At Home In Elkhart
Martin M. Shady, 82, for many years a resident of Adams county,
died this morning at Elkhart after a year's illness of cancer of the
stomach.
He had resided in Adams county most of his life, leaving this
community in 1913.
Surviving are his third wife, Pearl Dewey; three children, Mrs.
Ethel Bryan of Craigville, Mrs. Edith Carder of Fort Wayne and
Dewey M. Shady of Elkhart; two sisters, Mrs. Martha Ellen Beery of
Kendallville, and Mrs. Mary Jane Rex of Battle Creek, Michigan; a
brother, Marion F. Shady of Battle Creek, Mich.; 10 grandchildren and
three great grandchildren. His first two wives, Sally Wolfe and Allie
Call, preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be held at the Pleasant Valley church, one
mile east and one mile north of Tocsin, Thursday afternoon at 2
o'clock (CST), Rev. R. H. Heald of Fort Wayne will officiate, assisted
by Rev. Oscar Pace of Elkhart, Rev. C. C. Moore of Craigville and
Rev. Florence of Wilmore, Ky. Burial will be in the Shady cemetery.
The body has been taken to the Thoma funeral home at Bluffton.

Funeral services for Martin Monroe Shady, 82, retired farmer,
formerly of Craigville, whose death occurred at 1:45 p.m. Tuesday at his
home at 238 Gargeld avenue, Elkhart, will be held at 1:15 p.m.
Thursday at the Thoma funeral home and at 2 p.m. at the Pleasant
Valley church, in charge of Rev. R. H. Heald, assisted by Rev. Charles
Moore, of Craigville, and Rev. Pase, of Elkhart. Burial will be in the
Shady cemetery. The body will be at the Thoma funeral home until the
time of the funeral.
Mr. Shady was born in Wells county on Mar. 12, 1859, a son of
Joseph and Elizabeth Mills Shady. His first marriage was to Sally Wolf
and his second marriage was to Allie Call, both of whom are deceased.
He married Rev. Pearl Dewey on Aug. 15, 1911. She survives.
Two daughters and a son surviving are Mrs. Ethel Shady Bryan, of
Craigville; Mrs. Edith Carder, of Fort Wayne, and Dewey Martin
Shady, of Elkhart. One daughter [?], Arta Shady, is deceased.
A brother and two sister[s] surviving are Marion F. Shady, of Battle
Creek, Mich.; Mrs. Martha Ellen Beery, of Kendallville, and Mrs.
Mary Jane Rex, of Sturgis, Mich.

A resident of the Fort Wayne area most of his life, Roger D. Downing,
61, of Preble died at 5:50 a.m. Friday at Adams County Memorial
Hospital in Decatur.
He was an engineer with the Department of Defense in Fort Wayne
and Indianapolis, with 31 years of service.
Born March 6, 1938 in Fairbury, Ill., to Louis A. and Azelene S.
Knoop Downing, his marriage on June 22, 1968 in Fort Wayne was to
Nancy L. Dominy, who survives, along with the mother.
Other survivors include a son, Mark A. Downing of Preble, a daughter,
Kimberly K. Downing-Moser of Craigville, two grandchildren, a
brother, Ronald L. Downing of Wilmington, N.C., and a sister, M.
Joanne Downing of Fort Wayne.
He was a member of Roachdale House Fraternity at Purdue University
and Crystal Cathedral Sparrows Club and was involved with
Cub Scouts and the Lions Club.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Zwick & Jahn Funeral
Home in Decatur, where calling will be Monday from 2 to 5 and 6
to 9 p.m. Rev. Sylvester Martin will officiate at services and burial will
be in Shady Cemetery at rural Craigville.
