Joseph "Joshua" Dellinger1,2,3,4 (M)
b. circa 1737, d. circa 1826
Pop-up Pedigree

Joseph was born at Hellam Twp., York Co., Pennsylvania, circa 1737. He was the son of Johann "Jacob" Dellinger and Maria Barbara Gossner. He married Anna Barbara (?) at York Co., Pennsylvania, in 1759. Joseph "Joshua" Dellinger was mlt active duty in September 1781 at York Co., Pennsylvania; Prowell's History of York County shows in Vol. 1, pg. 278 that a Joseph Dellinger was a private in Captain Samuel Fulton's Company of York County Militia guarding the British prisoners at Camp Security in September 1781. A part of the County Militia was called out to serve 3 months or more at a time to guard prisoners at York during the years 1777-1779 and at Camp Security, four miles southeast of York, in 1781-1782. Adam Darron (sic) and Mathias Kern were also members of Capt. Fulton's Company. Camp Security was near present day Longstown on East Prospect Rd.
He was tax roll in 1783 at York Co., Pennsylvania; "History of York Co., Pennsylvania", John Gibson, 1886, p 606 and 724: A Jacob Dellinger, a John Dellinger and a Joseph Dellinger all were on the 1783 York Co. tax rolls with 100 acres each.

Prowell's History lists a Joseph Dellinger on the List of Taxables for Hellam Township in 1783 with 100 acres valued at 134 English pounds. Joseph was listed as the head of a family on the 1790 Census at Hellam Twp., York Co., Pennsylvania. He was land contract on 2 December 1794 at York Co., Pennsylvania; York County Deed Grantor Index shows that Joseph Dellinger sold land on 2 Dec 1794 (Book 2 "K", pg 213). He married Maria Catherine Boyer at York Co., Pennsylvania, after 2 December 1794. Joseph was listed as the head of a family on the 1800 Census at Hellam Twp., York Co., Pennsylvania. He lived in 1810 at Springettsbury Twp., York Co., Pennsylvania; The 1810 Plan of Springettsbury Manor shows tracts of land owned by Joseph Dellinger, Jacob Dellinger and Michael Dellinger. The land of Joseph now is the site of Mount Pisgah Church on Mount Pisgah Road and lies partly in Hellam Township and partly in Lower Windsor Township. The church is now called Trinity Church. The tract of land is labeled as containing 180 acres (scales at about 183 acres). It extends eastward from a point near the intersection of Bluestone Road about 0.9 miles. The average elevation is about 700 feet with scenic views in most directions.

Another tract is shown on the 1810 Plan as owned by Michael Dellinger and this parcel of 57 acres is located about 1300 feet to the south at the intersection of Canadochly Road and Schmuch Road. Cabin Creek flows through it. It is only about 0.5 miles from Canadochly Lutheran Church and Canadochly Reformed Church.

About 0.5 miles to the east of Michael's land on Canadochly Road lies a tract shown on the 1810 Springettsbury Manor Plan of a Jacob Dellinger of about 106 acres. This may be the original homestead.

The relationship of the three families of Dellingers has not yet been conclusively proven. However, the only Joseph of the appropriate age found in the church records is the Joseph of Hellam Township, the son of Jacob, the immigrant. So it is likely that the 180 acres was his land. The Michael shown as owning one tract of 57 acres may be Joseph's son. No proof has been found, but the circumstances make it plausible.

The Jacob Dellinger, who owned the 106 acres at the time of the "1810 Plan" could be one of several good candidates. But it appears likely that this is the land originally owned by the immigrant Jacob. If the labeling of the 1810 Plan is that of the then current owner as opposed to a former owner then he coud be Jacob, the youngest son of the immigrant Jacob, who was born in 1751 and married to Christina Schaeffer, whose children's baptisms are recorded in the registers of Canadochly Church, and who lived in Lower Windsor Township (Will dated 2 April 1824) This is conjectured to be the correct Jacob because an entry on the 1810 Plan indicates that a 77 acre portion of Jacob's 106 acre tract was deeded to a "Christina Dellinger", which may be his wife. Jacob's wife was Christina Schaeffer Dellinger.

One other clue is contained in a letter of Mrs. Ella M. Dellinger of Red Lion to Donald Billet of 5 March 1992, wherein she says that her father in law told her that "the Dellingers came over to America and settled on Mount Pisgah, overlooking the Susquehanna River, in early 1700's."
Joseph was listed as the head of a family on the 1810 Census at Hellam Twp., York Co., Pennsylvania. He left a will on 11 December 1820 at York Co., Pennsylvania; His Will dated 11 Dec 1820 and probated 4 Feb 1826 mentions the children of his deceased son, John: and names his children Jacob; Henry; Michael; Joseph; Elizabeth, wife of Daniel Foght; Catherina and Magdalena, wife of Christian Schnell. Witnesses to signing of the Will were John Becker, Conrad Leber and John Dellinger. The Will mentions land to be sold at public sale, but not the acreage. Will Book "P", pg. 256. Will Book P" -356 of 11 Dec 1820, probated 4 Feb 1826 lists residence Hellam Twp. Executors were Daniel Foght and George Abel. His second wife was the widow of George Abel.

Joseph died circa 1826 at Hellam Twp., York Co., Pennsylvania.
