Born near Nancy. His early life was spent at the court of Theudebert II, King of Austrasia. He was made the Bishop of Metz at the age of 30 in 612, even though he was a layman and did not want the position. He continued to act as an to King Chlotar II, whom he helped put on the Frankish throne. He also served as a tutor to Chlotar's son, Dagobert I. He retired in 629 to the monastic community of Remiremont in the Vosges mountains. His Feast Day is August 19. He married
