John was born at
Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania, on 13 July 1812. He was the son of
Jacob Hartley and
Catherine Becher. He married
Catherine O. Spangler at
Pennsylvania on 29 June 1834. John Hartley was migration; According to family tradition, John Hartley and his family moved "west" from Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania, however they returned back to Lancaster Co. sometime around 1841. The John Hartley finally moved to Hamilton Co., Indiana in 1848.
John Hartley does not appear to be a head of family in the 1840 census for Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania perhaps indicating that he had moved away prior to 1840.
The question remains, where is "west"?
He migrated in 1848. According to a 1866 Map of Hamilton Co., John Hartley owned 160 acres of land just east Millersburg, which is Jackson Twp., in White River Twp.. John was listed as the head of a family on the 1850 Census at
White River Twp., Hamilton Co., Indiana. John was listed as the head of a family on the 1860 Census at
White River Twp., Hamilton Co., Indiana. John was listed as the head of a family on the 1870 Census at
White River Twp., Hamilton Co., Indiana. He left a will on 9 March 1874 at
Hamilton Co., Indiana; The following is a transcript of the Will of John Hartley:
"In the name of the Benevolent Father of all, I John Hartley of Hamilton County in the State if Iindiana do make and publish this my last will and Testament. First I hereby nominate and appoint William Porter and my son William H. Hartley as Executors of my Estate both real and personal, to sell all my personal and real estate and to adjust all just claims for or against my estate after my debts are paid I will to my wife Cassa Hartley the one third part of the money derived from the Sale of my personal estate to be paid in hand when collected. My wife also to have the Interest of Twenty Five hundred Dollars, my wife to draw the, which interest is to remain in the Land of Twenty five hundred Dollars. My wife to draw the interest annually at six per cent during her natural life. After her death said twenty five hundred to be divided equally between my heirs as here in after named. George B. Harley, William H. Hartley, Albert S. Hartley, Gibert Hartley, Gerome Hartley, Barbara J. Merritt late Hartley, Elenora Leeman, late Hartley, Stephen Hartley and Charlotte Hartley.
I direct that so fast as money comes into the hands of my executors, after they have paid all my debts to pay the remainder to the above name heirs, share and share like, until both real and personal becomes exhausted also the above heirs to have share and share alike in all personal and real estate so soon as the money can be made of said estate. I do hereby revoke all former wills by me made. In testimony hereby I have here unto set my hand and seal this 9th day of March 1874.

John died on 20 March 1874 at
Arcadia, Hamilton Co., Indiana, at age 61. His body was interred in March 1874 at
Arcadia, Hamilton Co., Indiana, at Dunkard Cemetery at the Church of the Brethren. Church of the Brethren, in Arcadia. Buried in Cemetery Section 2, Lot 106. Shares a common stone with his wife Charlotte. Stone is just to the left of the first walkway, and about 3 rows west of the parking lot, and it faces west. I have pictures of his tombstone that is common with his wife..
