 6th June 1870

The 3rd Suffolk Rifle Corps marched down to Martlesham last Wednesday night, to the residence of John Newson Esq, who entertained them with a substantial supper.

12th January

Thomas Charles Cleveland and Frederick Wright have been elected Seckford Free Scholars, and Frederick Montague Edward Pizey a Marryot Free Scholar of this school.

Jane Crane of Hasketon was charged with having on 29th December last, stolen some lace and muslin value 5s from Mrs Steel of the Prince of Wales Inn, Woodbridge.

Iken - A few days ago, as Mr Barker of this parish, Innkeeper and steam engine proprietor, was at work with this steam threshing machine on Mr Chaplin's farm, his right hand unfortunately got entangled in the machinery and was so injured that it had to be amputated between the wrist and elbow. Great sympathy is felt for the sufferer, who is an industrious man. He is now progressing well.

Died - 7th inst at her residence, Mount Pleasant, Woodbridge, Rose, widow of the late Thomas Lee Esq, aged 84.

9th inst at the Kings Arms Inn, Woodbridge, much respected Mr Solomon Alexander Grout, 40, formerly landlord of the Sun Inn and brother to Mr John Grout of the Bull Hotel.

Recently at Ipswich, aged 2, Kate E, daughter of  Mr W Wheatcroft, hairdresser, late of Woodbridge.

9th inst after a few days illness, Caroline, eldest beloved daughter of Mrs M Wade, confectioner, Woodbridge, aged 22.

19th January

David Whayman, Mar 22nd aged 79. Thomas Pope, Apr 26th aged 84. John Bronse (?can't read my own writing here), infant, May 25th. John Brightwell, June 1st aged 64. 26th January

Married - Recently at Pettaugh, Mr S Jeaffreson of Framlingham to Mary Ann Cutting of Pettaugh.

18th inst at Wickham Market, Mr Frederick P Palmer of Upper Clifton St, Finsbury, London, to Harriet Mary, only daughter of the late Mr George Barrell and niece to Mr Samuel Leggett of Wickham Market.

Died - Recently at Capel Hall, Trimley St Martin, George Chevalier Dixon, aged 34.

16th inst at Martlesham, aged 46, Elizabeth, beloved wife of Mr Fenn Moore, miller.

16th inst at Melton, Mr William Rout, aged 73.

22nd inst, aged 51, Mr Alfred Read, greengrocer, Thoroughfare, Woodbridge, only surviving his wife by 10 months.

2nd February 1871

Died - Recently aged 46, Mrs Rebecca Hunt, widow of Mr Wright Hunt, corn merchant, Ispwich.

28th inst at the residence of her father, Sizewell Road, Leiston, aged 23, Sarah, eldest daughter of Mr David Ward and beloved wife of Mr Charles Jackson, moulder.

19th inst at Butley, Henry P Mayhew, aged 5 months, dearly beloved child of William & Eliza Mayhew of Butley.

23rd inst at Saxmundham, eldest daughter of Mr C B Rendle surgeon.

9th February 1871

Died - 26th ult at Otley, aged 74, Mr Matthew Peacock, formerly on Swilland Hall.

31st ult at Snape, of consumption after much suffering, Frances, the beloved wife of Francis Groom and 3rd daughter of James Cooper of Hazlewood Hall. Also the day following, their infant daughter.

28th ult at Walton, suddenly, Mr Robert Hughes, aged 72.

3rd inst at his residence, Seckford St, Woodbridge, Gundry Neave, aged 71.

29th ult at Wickham Market, Mr Sam Thurkettle, vet surgeon, aged 46.

16th February

Married - Mr Davy Crowe junior, son of Mr Davy Crowe, grocer, at St Mary's Woodbridge, to Miss Sarah Ann Groom, eldest daughter of Mr Joseph Groom of Church Street.

9th inst at the Presbyterian Church, Upper St Georges St, London, James George Skelton Anderson, s/o the Rev Alexander Anderson of Aberdeen, to Elizabeth Garrett, MD, 2nd d/o Mr Newson Garrett of Aldeburgh, (My note: Isn't there an Elizabeth Garrett Anderson hospital in London?)

8th inst at Marlesford Church, youngest s/o Mr Robert Buxton, farmer, of Marlesford, to Sarah, eldest d/o Mr J Rivers, farmer, of Framlingham.

4th inst at Bawdsey Church, James Pinder of London, to Ellen d/o Mr Edward Ransby, landlord of the Bawdsey Star Inn.

Died - 12th inst at Woodbridge, John Blowers, aged 55.

5th inst at Wickham Market, Mr John Catton, for 65 years a resident of that town.

4th inst at Saxmundham in his 39th year, Mr John Dale, walking postman from Saxmundham to Badingham.

5th inst at Bawdsey, Mr Charles Osborn, 85, farm bailiff to Miss Felgate.
