back Prologue: How Did They Meet? back
Map
You had to live nearby to know or care, but the ancient1 towns of Acton and Billerica (their original village centers, at least) lie twelve miles apart in the hills and forests of Middlesex County. Their citizens, before the Revolution and now, live largely town-centered lives. Back then, they would have worshipped in separate congregations of the same (legally-established) faith. It’s hard to imagine how young folks from Billerica and Acton would have become acquainted.

So how did our pivotal ancestors Oliver and Hepzibah ever meet and come to unite our revered Wheeler and Munroe lines? The answer becomes clear as we look into the story of their distinguished pioneer families and the history of the town of Carlisle, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.
