Leola, Tourist
back Leola, Tourist next
Leola and Duane sublet a Paris apartment for a goodly piece of that summer, and the marvelous President Rulon T Hinckley (Elder Richard’s boss) graciously let them spend rather more time with their on-duty missionary son than was strictly customary.

One of the “Points of Interest” they took in together was the Catacombs of the Place Denfert-Rochereau. This maze of tunnels under the Latin Quarter originally yielded much of the building stone for the structures above. Then when Paris ran out of cemetery space, they just stacked the excess bones from the old graveyards down there. In 1963, a 50-centime piece (about a dime) would get you admission down a rather scary ladder, a lighted candle, and a silent, cowled guide. Spooky, to say the least.

Richard’s camera captured the moment that begot the day’s most durable story: Leola’s visibly moved by the sight of all these ancient remains. She emphasizes her words by gesturing with her candle: “Just imagine the traffic jam on the Morning of the Resurrection!”
