When we came for that last wonderful Christmas (1967), we did the circuit of a number of châteaux, including this magnificent one at Chambord.

Richard took this photo. That’s the Mission-owned Citroën DS-21 in which Leola would die, six months later. You can just barely see her behind Duane, in the front seat. Back seat: Valerie and Ricky. Brent, just past the car.

Although this vehicle would prove no match for a brawny Mercedes in a collision, it did offer rather an impressive array of comfort features: Duane would refer to them as “les petits soins-soins.” With a vacuum control at the driver’s left hand, you could adjust the height of its floor relative to its suspension. When set close to the ground, its ride was very soft and smooth, and you could step down from a curb onto its thick foam-padded carpet: Leola would comment that she always thought she was stepping on something she shouldn’t. Adjusted higher up, you got more bounces, but you were less likely to bottom out on something.
