Pilgrim Elizabeth Tilley Howland, who came on the
Mayflower in 1620 with her husband Pilgrim John Howland, isn’t our blood kin. But she’s buried here among a veritable crowd of our Brownes for good reason.
Only one of Plymouth’s surviving historic houses was ever occupied by any Mayflower passenger. Beginning in 1670, John and Elizabeth Howland wintered with their son Jabez, in what we now call the Jabez Howland House. When John died, Elizabeth remained until 1680, when Jabez sold the house and she went to live in Swansea with daughter Lydia Howland Browne (1627-1710), wife of our Uncle (9G) James Brown, son of Worshipful John and Dorothy Brown…
