The Nauvoo House |
“The Nauvoo House, a $100,000 hotel was chartered in
1841. Had the building been completed, it would have contained a
suite of rooms for the Joseph Smith family and accommodated 300
guests.”*
When Joseph died in 1844, little more than the foundation of the Nauvoo House had been laid. |
“In 1869 Lewis Bidamon, whom Emma
Smith married in 1847, completed the Nauvoo House as it
stands today. Emma died here in 1879. Today the Nauvoo House is
run as a hotel and can accommodate various visitor groups.”*
This shot looks northward up Main Street from its end at the river, past the Nauvoo House and Lewis Bidamon’s stable to the Mansion House in the next block. *RLDS brochure |
