back The Nauvoo House back
Nauvoo House “The Nauvoo House, a $100,000 hotel was chartered in 1841. Had the building been completed, it would have contained a suite of rooms for the Joseph Smith family and accommodated 300 guests.”*

When Joseph died in 1844, little more than the foundation of the Nauvoo House had been laid.
“In 1869 Lewis Bidamon, whom Emma Smith married in 1847, completed the Nauvoo House as it stands today. Emma died here in 1879. Today the Nauvoo House is run as a hotel and can accommodate various visitor groups.”*

This shot looks northward up Main Street from its end at the river, past the Nauvoo House and Lewis Bidamon’s stable to the Mansion House in the next block.
