With nine of their ten children, John and Mary Barr
Neff came to live in Nauvoo, soon after the martyrdom of Joseph
and Hyrum Smith. Amanda had already died young, in
Pennsylvania. Cyrus would soon break many hearts, we're told,
by dying of the fever in Winter Quarters. The other eight went on
with their parents to settle the West, particularly East Mill Creek
in the Salt Lake Valley.
Here’s, as far as I know, the only
surviving portrait of
Mary Ann Neff Rockwell,
beloved (second, sequential) wife of
Orrin Porter Rockwell.
Alfa Jean Carter’s Big
Neff Book gives many fascinating details.
The Neff properties were extensive but
all east of Durphy Street. So, no trace remains. That whole area
is now a state park and an RLDS campground.
