Watertown: Gerry’s Landing |
SIR RICHARD’S LANDING HERE AT THE RIVER’S EDGE THE SETTLERS OF WATERTOWN LED BY SIR RICHARD SALTONSTALL LANDED IN JUNE, 1630. LATER THIS SPOT BECAME KNOWN AS GERRY’S LANDING, FOR ELBRIDGE GERRY, SIGNER OF THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE AND GOVERNOR OF MASSACHUSETTS WHO LIVED IN “ELMWOOD” NEARBY. MASSACHUSETTS BAY COLONY TERCENTENARY COMMISSION While Tercentenary markers have been known to perpetuate apocrypha, this location may well command a measure of belief. In Colonial times, the Charles was bounded on each side by a wide swath of marshland, not by the bike paths and neat landscaping we see now. Saltonstall may well have had to paddle and pole this far north to find solid ground. Here’s some context on “Elmwood” and the “Gerry’s Landing" neighborhood. |
