back Row vs. Bacon, 1676 next

On the 3rd of October, 1676, another Middlesex jury (MXCC III: 148) found in favor of William Munrow (a.k.a. “Row,” in the same sentence), plaintiff, against Michael Bacon. It seems that Goodwife Munroe (that’s our Mary, all grown up) sold a cow to Bacon, who subsequently “Refused” it, whatever that means.

Big Brother John Ball, now 30 years old and apparently literate enough to sign his own name, sticks up for his little sister. So does John’s wife Sarah (Bullard) Ball, signing by mark.

One wonders where Uncle John was ten years earlier, when Mary was going astray in the Bacon household. But maybe one shouldn’t expect too much of a 21-year-old.
