According to
British Army Pension Records, he was a farmer when he
enlisted at Bletchley Recruiting Office on 14 December 1915.
He was appointed to the 96th Territorial Reserve Battalion Ð perhaps because of his occupation.
However, he appears to have seen at least one spell in the British Expeditionary Force at the end of September 1917.
He served as a private in the Gloucestershire regiment, (Reg no 18422) and then in Labour Corp (Reg no. 378263)
He married Edith Gertrude Bishop Heritage from Buckingham in 1911 and raised a family of seven
- six of them girls.
