Like many families at that time they had a very hard life. They were very poor, in fact my mother could remember having to beg for money so they could buy food. However things later changed for the better. My Grandfather was a member of The Skeleton Army (they used to ridicule The Salvation Army). One evening in the small town of Buckingham my Grandfather started to disrupt an "Open Air Meeting" of the Salvation Army. The Officer in charge requested my Grandfather to let the meeting finish, and afterwards the Officer was prepared to take either verbal or physical abuse or both. However the evening finished with my Grandfather kneeling at the bass drum seeking the Lord, and from that day forward he became a staunch Salvationist as did all his chidren. Life for all of them improved dramatically. My Grandfather later moved the family to Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire and many of the descendents still reside in the town.
