The White Hart

The 'White Hart' was one of several public house, inns and beer houses in Tingewick, of which I think only the 'Crown' and the 'Royal Oak' remain in business. I believe the 'Red Lion' at Little Tingewick on the boundary with Finmere has reopened after a brief closure in 2004 due to a kitchen fire.

In 1830 (from Pigot & Co's directory) the landlord of the White Hart was James Berry
In 1842 (Piggot's) it was Thos. Bradbury.
The 1847 Post Office Directory does not mention the White Hart, but lists 3 "beer retailers", one of whom may have been the landlord.
Likewise the 1854 Kelly's Directory does not identify the landlord but still lists two of the above 'beer retailers'.
In 1861 (census returns) the publican was Amos Sharman, who was also a coal merchant.
In 1869 (Post Office Directory) the landlord was George James Starkey.
In 1872 (Return of Public Houses and Beer Houses) it was recorded as a Public House, with its licence first granted more than 50 years ago. The then occupier (who was also the owner) was still George James Starkey of Tingewick. It was at that time the only owner-occupied House in the parish.
In 1877 (Post Office Directory) it was occupied by Thomas Henry Wrighton.
In 1881 (census) the publican was Robert Baker, who was also a fishmonger.
In 1883, 1887 1891 (Kelly's Directories) it was occupied by George Alcock, who was also a skin dealer.
The 1891 (census) also records George Alcock as the publican.
In 1895 (Kelly's) Walter Frost was the occupier.
In 1899 (Kelly's) William Timms was there. (I don't have any other record of this William - perhaps it is a mis-type for Willoughby?)
In 1903 and 1907 (Kelly's) it was Willoughby Timms.
In 1911 (Kelly's) it was James Cherry.
In 1915, 1920, 1924 (Kelly's) it was Amos Lewis.
In 1928 and 1939 (Kelly's) - Frederick Tapping. In 1931 and 1935 he is listed as also a 'poultry and dairy farmer'
