Family
Group 4
Probable
Descendants of Thomas Osborne and Mary Goatley of Ashford, Co.

Caution, Warning,
Disclaimer: The ancestral lines shown below are the
ancestors that each project member, highlighted in yellow, BELIEVES to be
their ancestors. Standards of proof
or evidence used by each member may vary, and documentation for each
ancestor may vary. These listings alone
should not be taken as proof of ancestry; they are shown here to facilitate
the finding of a common ancestor by project members or by others who may
wish to test to see if their ancestral lines connect to one of the members. For more information, please contact the
individual members at the email addresses listed below. |
This family group now has thirty-four people and
is by far the largest Family Group in the project. With the new members in this group, their results,
and the additional connections to Thomas m Mary Goatley, there is more
evidence that everyone in this group is related in some way to this immigrant
Thomas Osborne. So the name of this
group has been changed, as above, as had been contemplated earlier.
Three groups now know how they are related
between themselves: A group of nine,
with Gerald, Nancy, Wayne, Bartley, Mark, Daniel and Darlene, Ralph Waite and
Dick Osborn, Jones and Heather, and Kathleen and Douglas now know their
ancestors all the way back to John Osborn of Ashford, Kent, England, ancestor
of the immigrant Thomas Osborne m Mary Goatley. Joseph M Osborn and Gerald E Osborne know
how they are related; and John P and Denver J Osborne know how they are
related. The remaining people still do
not know how they connect to anyone else, but with the dna results
consistently indicating that they are descendants of this Thomas, there can
be only a few missing generations to find.
Several people in this FG have had the 25- and
37-marker tests; see the Alleles
table. This has provided enough
information to establish a most likely Ancestral Haplotype by taking the
majority value for each allele, and I have added a line for that in the
Alleles table. As shown in the Alleles tabel, the value on Allele 391 divides
the members of this Family Group into two subgroups. With the latest members, the vote for the
value on Allele 391 is now eighteen having a value of 12 and sixteen having a
value of 11 for the most likely value of that Allele in the ancestral
haplotype. This now makes Mark
Osborne and David Robert Osborn the sole bearers of the 37-marker Ancestral
Haplotype, and everyone else has at least one mutation from it. However, the value of Allele 391 in the
ancestral haplotype has alternated from 11 to 12 as new members have joined
this group, and Joe Osborn has correctly pointed out that a simple majority
vote could be wrong if one group has more closely related people in it. We cannot know that because so many people
don’t know how they are related. But
it likely means that this mutation happened very early in the line and has
divided the descendants into two major branches.
We now have four of the sons of Thomas Osborne
and Mary Goatly (generation 7) represented in the project by the “group of
nine”. Of those, all the descendants
of sons Thomas, Jeremiah, and John have an 11 as the value of Allele 391, and
only those who are descendants of Stephen have a value of 12 for Allele
391. I have illustrated that by highlighting
the descendants of Stephen in blue instead of yellow. Based on this view, it would appear that
the ancestral haplotype has an 11 on Allele 391 because that is present in
three of the four sons of Thomas, and that the mutation happened somewhere early
in Stephens line.
Whichever way we take it, establishing an
ancestral haplotype allows each person to compare their results to the
Ancestral Haplotype to get a better understanding of the mutations in their
own line.
The hypothetical scenario that was previously
worked out to explain the dna test results is still shown to illustrate the
approach, but needs to be reworked in light of more recent members and their
tests.
Ancestral Lines
Below are the individual ancestral lines as far
back as they are known. Hyperlinks are
to that persons listing in the Linked Family Records at Osborne Origins.
Descendants of John Osborne
There is now a large group who can trace their
lines back to Thomas and earlier.
Previously, Nancy and Wayne had their lines back to Jeremiah m Mary
Newman, but could go no further.
Recent research by Joe and Lee has convinced them that the father of
this Jeremiah is likely to be another Jeremiah which is was previously listed
as two separate people. At the
suggestion of Lee, I have listed both of these Jeremiah’s as the father of
Jeremiah m Mary Newman. See Note 3
below for more on this situation. This
allows the connection of

Note 1: Lee Osborn has identified primary sources of
information back to Thomas Osborne-12724, but not earlier. The ancestors of Thomas shown here are
believed by some people to be his ancestors and are shown here with this
caveat until better documentation is found.
Note 2: According to research that Gerald Osborn,
Joe Osborn, and Lee Osborne have done, the records are clear enough about who
Phineas’ (b.1760-1770) relatives are to know from circumstantial evidence
that Ephriam Osborn (b Abt 1690) is his grandfather. The problem is that
Ephraim and Mary had three sons whose families aren't known -- John, Daniel,
and Phineas (b. 1735) -- and currently there are no records giving a clue as
to which of these is father of Phineas (b. ca1766). In order to continue Gerald’s ancestors as
far back as is known, I have listed the three
possibilities for Phineas’ father, and then continued with Phineas’ known
grandfather.
Note 3: The problem at this point is that there
is primary documentation for two Jeremiah Osborn’s, now shown separately as Jeremiah Osborne-12665, and Jeremiah-5482
on Lee’s Osborne Origins. There is
documentation that Jeremiah-12665 is the father of Jeremiah-4828 m Mary
Newman, who is

project, joining in November 2010 with a 67-marker test. He and Mark Osborn, above, are a perfect match on all 67 markers, which
is rare. This indicates a very recent
common ancestor and the FTDNATip probabilites (see the 67-marker
Genetic Distance table) indicate that there is an 89.79% cumulative
probability that David and Mark are related within 4 generations. Marks line above seems pretty well
established, so Davids line may need to be
re-examined closely given this new dna knowledge.

Hypothetical
Explanation of Relationships and DNA Results
In looking at the results in
this group back in early 2006, we were fortunate to have Gerald’s well
documented line 11 generations back to the immigrant Thomas Osborne m Mary
Goatley, and to also have several people who have dna results for 25 and 37
marker tests. So the question arose as
to how these twelve people could be descendants of one person and yet have
the dna results obtained in the various tests. The genetic distances themselves are not
much help. But the genetic distance
between two people is basically the number of mutations in the Alleles
table. So we can look at the mutations
in the Alleles table and try to find a combination of mutations and when they
occurred along the generations, which would match the known relationships AND
the dna results. To demonstrate how
this might happen, refer to the diagram below which is a plot of each
person’s ancestors along a time scale.
Time plot of ancestors of group
members (click for larger image) |
|||||
|
In the diagram, the time
scale up the left side goes from 1950 back to 1530. Each known ancestor of each person in the group
is shown by a solid point and their name, and the generations are connected
by a solid line. The names and dates
are from the ancestral lists above.
Hypothetical and unknown people and generations are shown by open
circles connected dashed lines. Known
people with unknown or private dates are shown in their approximate positions
by diagonal slashes. Unknown
generations are assumed to be about 30 years apart, a common assumption and
fairly consistent with the known generations.
Mutations are shown by an X
in a box with the Allele number beside it.
Mutations are also highlighted in yellow in the Alleles table. For this entire Family Group, mutations
have only occurred in 5 locations in the entire Alleles table: #390 and #391 in the 12 marker test; #449
and #464c in the 25 marker test; and #576 in the 37 marker test. For purposes of calculating a genetic
distance, the two step mutation on #464c counts a genetic distance of only
1. Only a few people have taken the 25
marker test, and only a few of those the 37 marker test, so that means that
some people who have not taken these higher level tests may have additional
mutations if and when they take higher level tests and that may change the
conclusions somewhat.
The thumbnail image links to
the current version of the diagram.
Previous versions can be accessed by clicking on the previous version
numbers below the diagram. It is
anticipated that the diagrams will be updated as we get new people and new
data is added. For example, version
2.0 adds Denver J who connects to John P’s line at Sherwood, and moves John E
over to hypothetically connect with Thorstan’s line.
The earliest ancestor by far
is Gerald’s line which goes back to Thomas m Mary Goatly and his father
Jeremy. There is a lot of time and
many generations between the earliest ancestor of every other person and
these two, so there are lots of unknown ancestors in the diagram.
There are three pairs of
people who have known common ancestors; Nancy and Wayne who have Jeremiah in
common; Joe and George E who have Caleb in common; and John P and
First we observe that Joe is
the ONLY person in the entire Family Group that has a mutation on Allele
#390. If it weren't for that mutation,
Joe would be solidly in Subset A and match each person exactly. So it should be safe to assume that this
mutation happened in Joe's line, sometime after Caleb or William. It could be anywhere along his line as long
as it’s after Caleb, but it has been arbitrarily indicated by the X in his line after William. That explains how he and George E can both
descend from Caleb and yet not match.
(All mutations are indicated by an X along the ancestral lines.)
Given that, then Joe and
George E can be grouped with the others in Subset A; Donald, Denver J, John
P, Nancy, and Wayne. Now we have two
distinct groups which are different on the 12 marker test ONLY in Allele
#391. Now if we assume that ultimately
Subset A descends from Thomas m Mary Goatly, then there must have been a
mutation on #391 after that split in one of the lines. That mutation has been arbitrarily shown
between Thomas m Mary Goatly and John in Gerald’s line based on the
"majority vote" principle.
It could be anywhere after the Subset A and Subset B lines split off,
but before there are any other splits in Gerald's line.
We assume that Thomas m Mary
Goatly is the common ancestor because he is the immigrant and it is more
likely that the lines split after him, than that several lines split from
Jeremy or earlier and then immigrated.
But it is nevertheless a working assumption and not proven.
The "majority vote"
principle (my term) is based on the belief that mutations are very rare, and
therefore when mutations do occur in a marker position, the mutation with the
LEAST number of occurrences in the group is probably the mutation. Note that this is PROBABLY, and not a
certain thing, but as the number of people being compared increases, the
higher the probability that this is correct.
These two single mutations
explain the 12 marker results. But
there are some people who have 25 marker results and, of those, a few have 37
marker results.
Alleles #449 and #464c are in
the 25 marker tests. If we look at the
#449 values, we see that everyone has 29 except Gerald who has a 28. So we can assume that Gerald’s line is the
one who had the mutation. So Gerald’s
line has been assigned that mutation, and arbitrarily placed between William
and Arthur in his line, but it could be anywhere AFTER his line splits from
anyone else.
Now we go on to #464c. In this case 4 people have a value of 15
and 2 people have a value of 17, so by majority vote, we assume that the 17's
are the mutations, and they then occur in John P's line and in David M's
line. They have been arbitrarily
placed somewhere along those lines.
This explains the 25 marker results.
Looking at the 37 marker
results, of the 4 people who have 37 marker results, 3 have a value of 19 on
Allele #576, and only one, John P, has a value 20. So by majority vote we assume that John P's
line has the mutation.
At the present time, we
cannot say whether the two mutations in John P’s line are also shared by
With these mutations assigned
as shown, it explains all the various genetic distances we have for the three
levels of tests.
On the diagram, some
arbitrary guesses have been made at how the lines might have split
apart. These can be wrong, but there
are certain connections that the dna indicates. First, we know that all those in Subset A
as a group split off from Thomas m Mary Goatly before the #391 mutation that
separates the two subsets A and B. We
know that Joe and George are now part of Subset A, and that their line joined
subset A before the earliest known ancestor of that subset, Jeremiah, Nancy
and
The ONLY person who has a 37
marker result that does not have a mutation is
In the current version 2.0 of
the diagram, versus the previous version 1.0, Denver J has been added on the
left next to John P’s line and the two lines merged into Sherwood
Osborne. Also, John E has just
received his 25 marker results and they show a perfect match on 25 markers to
Thorstan. The perfect match on the 25
marker test indicates a fairly close common ancestor, so I have exchanged the
position of John E’s line with David M’s line and shown John E and Thorstan
sharing a common ancestor before their line merges with Geralds. Again these are only assumptions which are
suggested by the dna results and have to be proven by conventional research
and documentation.
Several additional people in
the group have already ordered the higher level tests, so it will be
interesting to see what those tests show, and if they are consistent with
this interpretation.
Overall this hypothesis seems
very reasonable. The mutations, with the exception of John P's, are spread
out fairly evenly as we would expect, and the total number of mutations is
minimized which is also reasonable. We
may find more individual mutations when the new tests come back. The time diagram also gives some indication of how many
missing ancestors must be found and in what lines.
