Family Group 11

Merlyn Robb Osborn, Carlton Morris & Donald Osburn, and Kenneth E Osborne

Caution, Warning, Disclaimer:  The ancestral lines shown below are the ancestors that each project member, highlighted in yellow, BELIEVES to be their ancestors.  Standards of proof or evidence used by each member may vary, and documentation for each ancestor may vary. These listings alone should not be taken as proof of ancestry; they are shown here to facilitate the finding of a common ancestor by project members or by others who may wish to test to see if their ancestral lines connect to one of the members.  For more information, please contact the individual members at the email addresses listed below.

Merlyn Robb has been a member of the project for some time, but had been alone in his Family Group, as are many others in the project.  Now this Family Group has grown to include three others.  As shown in the Alleles table and the Genetic Distance tables, Merlyn Robb and Donald are perfect matches on the 37 marker tests.  Both differ by one on only one allele to Carlton Morris and Kenneth E who are perfect matches on 25 markers.

Since both Carlton and Robb know how they are related, it is interesting to compare their known common ancestors to the probabilities from the FTDNTip Report, and this is shown below.  The results for Carlton Morris Osburn match closely with Robb, being a perfect match on 12 markers, and only a genetic distance of 1 on 25 markers.  By conventional paper genealogy, as shown below, these two distant cousins share a common ancestor back 11 generations and 300+ years at Richard Osborn, b 1612 in London, England.

Shown below are the FTDNATip results for the probability of a common ancestor based on the 25 marker results, for both an unconditional probability and for a conditional probability knowing that they are not related within 10 generations.  As the table shows, the probability is quite high for a common ancestor within a few generations, and gets even higher if we know that they are not related within 10 generations, which is the case based on their known ancestral lines.

As a benchmark for other similar situations, we note that the conditional probability is only 48.4% for a common ancestor from 10 – 14 generations knowing that there is no common ancestor within 10 generations.  Also, dividing 11 generations into the approximately 330 years between Richard Osborn and Carlton and Robb gives about 30 years per generation in comparison to the 25 years assumed by FTDNA.

Migration.  The earliest known location of this line is London England.  Then the migration is into CT, where it stays in Fairfield Co. OH for several generations, then Carlton’s line moves into upstate NY, then to MI.  Robb’s line leaves NY and goes further west into IA and finally NE.  This is an example of how some New England Osborn’s migrated due west into the upper Midwest.

........................................... 8   Donald Osburn

Originally, Donalds Edmund Osburn was thought to be Edmund, the son of Reuben Osborn, m Ellen Middlebrook, who is shown on Osborne Origins.  But recent research by Lee Osborne has found that the two Reubens are not the same, and so how Donald’s line connects to Richard Osborn is unknown, even though the dna test shows that he is related to this line.

Migration.  The earliest known location of this line is in WV and stays in WV for many generations. The problem facing both Donald and Kenneth is to figure out how their ancestors migrated from CT to WV and NC.

Contacts.  To exchange information or inquire about Donalds line please email Donald at <ocalamoose@comcast.net >.
