Migration:  This family also first appears in Mecklenburg Co., NC and stays there for several generations, then apparently migrates to GA and FL.

John Osborne’s Diary:  James’ 5th Grandfather, John Osborne, kept a daily diary for over 20 years.  Two volumes of the diary, covering the years 1800 to 1802, and 1819 to 1821, have been found and transcribed and placed on the web at:  http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~helmsnc/osborndiary/

The diary really gives one a sense of what life was like back then, which is hard to imagine now.  His phrasiology... "I sot off for to get..." is very interesting.  Also, he did a lot of visiting, and apparently when it happened to be meal time, he ate with them, and when it was nightime he spent the night.  He couldn't call ahead because there were no phones, so he just dropped in on people.  He probably made semi-regular rounds selling the whiskey he made.  Sounds like they drank a lot too.  Also he had some problem with his father about landownership which bothered him.  You will find this fascinating reading.

Betty Ann Osborne has been researching her ancestors for over 25 years and has recently joined the DNA Surname Project using her brother, Harold James, as her surrogate DNA donor.  Below are their ancestors as far back as she has been able to trace them.

The dna results show that Joseph and Harold should share a common ancestor back about 7 to 9 generations (See the 25 and 37 marker FTDNATip probabilities to estimate the 50% maximum likelyhood distance)  Since Betty Ann has traced her immigrant ancestor back to Donegal, Ireland, it is likely that Josephs distant ancestors also originated in Ireland.

Migration:  These are Betty Ann’s comments on the family migration:

“The nine children of Moses/Sarah Osborne all lived out their entire lives in New Brunswick. By the start of the 1900s, many of their children and their descendants migrated down into the eastern states.  A few chose to remain in Canada, but migrated to the western provinces.

There are several Osborne surname families still living in New Brunswick/Nova Scotia today but it appears that their ancestors came from England.  Although there are still several lineage descendants with other surnames living in the New Brunswick/Nova Scotia area today, as at 1999, none with the Osborne surname were found to be descendants of Moses Osborne.
