Caution, Warning, Disclaimer:  The ancestral lines shown below are the ancestors that each project member, highlighted in yellow, BELIEVES to be their ancestors.  Standards of proof or evidence used by each member may vary, and documentation for each ancestor may vary. These listings alone should not be taken as proof of ancestry; they are shown here to facilitate the finding of a common ancestor by project members or by others who may wish to test to see if their ancestral lines connect to one of the members.  For more information, please contact the individual members at the email addresses listed below.

Andrew is the only person in the project who is currently living in England and whose known ancestors have continuously lived in the United Kingdom.  Below is the note Andrew sent with his request to join the Surname Project:

“My grandfather ARTHUR JOHN OSBORN (his father was named CHARLES JOHN OSBORN) was born 29 January 1894 in 101 King Street, Ramsgate, and died 06 January 1971 in St Peter's Hospital, Chertsey.  He married SUSANNA ISABELLA THOMSON 20 April 1920 in Tannadice, Forfar, daughter of GEORGE THOMSON and SUSANNA CARNEGIE.  She was born 31 October 1897 in Pingarawa Estate, Badulla, Ceylon, and died 1965 in Edinburgh.”

We had hoped that Andrew might have a common ancestor with someone in the project thus giving a connection to an ancestral line in England.  But Andrew is not related to anyone else in the project by the usual genetic distance rules, having a GD of 2 to the closest other members who are in Family Group 4.  His FTDNATip cumulative probabilities to other members in Family Group 4 are typically 0.92%; 4.75%; 11.56%; 20.47%; 30.44%; and 40.56% for 4,8,12,16,20,and 24 Generations.  Since the highest probability does not reach 50% within 24 generations, he is judged not related.  Therefore he is shown in a separate family group.

However, the FTDNATip calculations allow one to recalculate a conditional probability if it is known that two people are not related within a certain number of recent generations.  If we assume for example, that Andrew could not have had a common ancestor with J. David Osborn, a member of Family Group 4, within 6 generations, we get the following result (copied from the FTDNATip calculator):

Knowing that Mr. Andrew P. Osborn and J. D. Osborn could not have had a common ancestor in the last 6 generations, their 12 marker comparison shows that the probability that they shared a common ancestor within the last...

6 – 10 generations is
4.7%

14 generations is
12.25%

18 generations is
21.67%

22 generations is
31.91%

26 generations is
42.12%

30 generations is
51.72%

This is certainly a reasonable assumption because we know the emigrant ancestor of Family Group 4, and that he lived well over 6 generations before the present members.   Since the cumulative probability for 30 generations is over 50%, this indicates that Andrew and the other members of Family Group 4 should share a common ancestor within about 30 generations.  So there is some evidence, theoretically at least, to show that Andrew is distantly related to members of Family Group 4, and the early ancestral line shown there.
