This picture is Papa's work picture when he was working at the Atomic Energy Plant in Paducah.  One of the reasons he took the job was to qualify for Social Security.

Papa Burnett, Earl Rust, Jim Johns, Shirley Rust (peeking) and Carolyn Rust. This picture looks like it was taken in front of the porch on Papa's new house shortly after it was built in about 1952.

Mama and Papa's house burned down about 1952 and they lost all of their possessions. They lived in their cellar while friends and relatives built the new house. I believe the new house was built in the summer of 1952, because  I stayed with them in the cellar and helped build the house and did other chores.

The cellar was normally used by Papa to strip and store tobacco and other things.  It had no windows and was cool and dark.  Papa had no running water at the time, and you can see the wash pan behind the rocker on the right.  That front area served as the living room.  The cellar was in the lot, or chicken pen, and there was no grass; hence the blocks for walking when it rained and the ground was muddy.

This is the new house.  The cellar would be on the right behind the tree. That big tree survived the fire and probably three genertions of us sat under that tree and visited in the summers.  After Mama and Papa died and the house was sold, all of the outbuildings were removed, and the house was moved. But, at least as of a few years ago, the cellar was still there; the only identifiable part of the old farm.

Several of Mama and Papa's family in 1954.  Left to right:  Papa Burnett; Uncle Marvin, Mama's brother; Mama Burnett;  Earl Rust, Catherine's husband;  Marie;  Catherine; and Ruth.

Mama and Papa on their 50th wedding anniversary in 1955.

From the Paducah newspaper, Nov. 1955.  Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Burnett, New Hope Rd., will celebrate their Golden Wedding Anniversary on Saturday, Nov. 26, with an open house at the home of their daughter, Mrs. Carl Osborne, on Clinton Rd. Friends and relatives are invited to call between the hours of two and five p.m.
Mr. and Mrs. Burnett were married November 22, 1905, at Mrs. Burnett's home in Lowes by the Rev. Watts. They are the parents of seven children...They also have 18 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.. All of the children are expected to be home for Thanksgiving.

Mama's wedding ring was lost in the the house fire, and at their 50th anniversary party, the grandson of Rev. Watts conducted the renewal of their vows  with a new wedding ring that Papa had bought for Mama.

This beautiful lady is not really a movie star; it is Dorothy Burnett Johns, Sue's mother,  in a protrait taken in 1957.
