Background:
Nicholas
Meriwether was born in 1782 in Virginia, the son of Dr. Frank and Martha
Jamison Meriwether, and grandson of Thomas and Elizabeth Thornton Meriwether of
Albemarle County, Virginia. Dr. Meriwether moved with his parents to the Broad
River area of Georgia in 1784 where he studied medicine and to Montgomery,
Alabama, in 1816, where he also practiced medicine. He and his family resided
near Mathews, Alabama.
