William married Mary (also known as Nancy [Family Register]) Maddox on 28 Mar 1789 in Culpeper County [Bond: County Record]. She was born in 1772 the daughter of John and Jane (Calvert) Maddox. Nancy died 2 Feb 1815 [Family Register].
William then married his cousin Mary Wade Covington on 4 Dec 1817 [Bond: County Record]. She was born 1 Oct 1777 [Family Register] the daughter of Francis Strother and Lucy (Strother) Covington. Mary died on 4 Feb 1852 [Family Register] in Rappahannock Co., Virginia.
By the time he died William had acquired 1243 acres of land in Rappahannock Co., Virginia, and 28 slaves.
Philip Deatherage, son of William and Mary, during the War of 1812, enlisted on 10 Aug 1814 in Captain Shackleford's Company, 1st Regiment Virginia Militia at Gaines Cross Roads, Culpeper County (now Rappahannock) for a term of six months. He was honorably discharged on 17 Dec 1814 at Fredericksburg, Virginia. On 26 Aug 1819 William Deatherage gave his son Philip a power of attorney to represent him in the estate proceedings of William's brother John who died in Nashville, Tennessee. In the 1850 and 1860 federal census Philip was living at or near Flint Hill and he listed his occupation as "None". In 1853 he applied for and received a bounty land warrant for his service during the War of 1812. Philip died intestate on 12 Oct 1866 in Rappahannock County [Rappahannock County Deathbook 1866 p.30].
John Deatherage, son of William and Mary, was appointed postmaster of Gaines Cross Roads Post Office on 27 Sep 1827. He held that positon until 29 Jan 1866. In 1860 John was listed as a "Farmer-Merchant" in the Federal Census. He died intestate in 1867 in Rappahannock County [Probate Record]. Sources

Philemon, son of George and Margaret Deatherage, was married on 23 Jun 1814 [Wheeler] to Elizabeth Joyce. Elizabeth was the daughter of Elisha Joyce [Early Families]. Philemon died on 16 Aug 1817 in Roane Co., Tennessee [County Record]. Elizabeth married second James Scales, Jr., on 13 Jan 1819 [Early Families]. She apparently died before 13 Nov 1837 when James married his third wife Mrs. Charlotte (Dalton) Dalton, a widow [Early Families]. James was born on 11 Apr 1780, the son of Henry [Early Families]. He married his first wife, Mary Scales, on 23 Jan 1803 [Early Families]. James died on 18 May 1860 in Rockingham County [Early Families].
Robert Deatherage, son of George and Margaret Deatherage, wrote his will on 3 Sep 1817. It was probated in Nov 1817. In the will he named his sister-in-law Elizabeth Deatherage, brother Philemon, dec'd, niece Patsey, daughter of his Uncle Solomon Deatherage, children of his Uncle Thomas Dalton, Sally, Robert, William, Elizabeth, and James, his mother-in-law, Charlotte Deatherage, and the children of his Uncle James Joice, James A., Thomas H., George D., Joseph, and Felix G. He also mentioned his uncle Bird Deatherage, dec'd. He named his friend Nathaniel Scales as his executor. The witnesses were John Fields, Thos. Smith and Nath'l. Fields. Sources

10. BIRD DEATHERAGE3 (Philemon2, William1) was the son of Philemon and Elizabeth Deatherage. Bird died in 1815 [Probate Record].
Pennsylvania Norman was born at Virginia [1850 federal census]. Bird and Pennsylvania began living together and had three children. They were then married and had their fourth child. Pennsylvania Deatherage lived at Rockingham Co., North Carolina, until between 1820 and 1830. In 1830 she was living at Gallatin Co., Kentucky. She died on 16 Jun 1868 [Wheeler] at Carroll Co., Kentucky.
Bird wrote his will on 28 Apr 1815. He mentions his mother Elizabeth, his brother James, his children Ellender Green Norman Deatherage, Granville Norman Deatherage, Sarah Norman Deatherage and Elizabeth Deatherage, the first three being born before his marriage. Land of Philemon Deatherage is mentioned. He named his friend Nicholas Dalton as his executor. The will was witnessed by Wm Jennings and Chas Harris. The will was probated in May 1815. Sources

Mary married about 1801 Thomas Dalton. Thomas was born about 1770 [Wheeler] and he died in Rockingham Co., North Carolina, in 1864 [Probate Record]. He wrote his will on 12 Mar 1858. He named his son William, his daughter Elizabeth Joyce, heirs of Garrett, heirs of son Robert Dalton, and grandsons William F. and John Dalton. He named his son William his executor. 14. PHILIP DEATHERAGE3 (John2, William1) son of John and Sarah Edwards (Gale) Deatherage, was born 10 Mar 1762 [Wheeler: Bible] in Virginia. He died on 7 Sep 1829 in Morgan Co., Illinois [Wheeler].
Philip married Milly Merry on 30 Aug 1792 [Wheeler: Bible]. Milly was a daughter of Thomas Merry.
Philip moved his family to Kentucky were his youngest son was born. He was living in Logan Co., Kentucky, in 1820 when his daughter Elizabeth was married. He later moved to Morgan Co., Illinois.
Philip, died intestate (without a will). Records of his estate are found at Morgan Co., Illinois. On 7 Sep 1829 Coleman Deatherage was named administrator of Philip estate in an Administrator's Bond, William Rogers and William Deatherage also signed the bond all were from Morgan Co., Illinois. An inventory Philip's estate was done on 16 Sep 1829 by William Rogers, David Watkins, and Henry Pearcy. Each of them received $1.25 for appraising the estate. An Administrator's Account, dated 30 Dec 1830, shows one third of the estate being paid to Milly Deatherage, widow of the dec'd. The following people were given shares in the proceeds of the estate: Jesse Cheek and Nancy Cheek, formerly Nancy Deatherage; Stephen Deatherage; Patsy Deatherage, apparently same as widow of Lewis Deatherage, dec'd; Betsey Deatherage, wife of Coleman Deatherage, the administrator; Michael Stumbaugh and Salley Stumbaugh, formerly Salley Deatherage. Settling the estate required the administrator to travel to Kentucky. He charged the estate $36 for the trip and received $154.37 1/2 cash in Kentucky. Sources

18. LEWIS DEATHERAGE3 (John2, William1) was a son of John and Sarah Edwards (Gale) Deatherage. He moved from Stokes Co., North Carolina, after 1810. He was living in Logan Co., Kentucky, in 1814. When Simpson County was formed in 1819 his home was in the new county. He died in Simpson County in 1821 [Wheeler]. His estate is listed in the court order book but the estate papers could not be located.
He married Elizabeth -. She was possibly a Gaines the daughter of Robert and Mildred (Bohanon) Gaines. She may have been a Martin. Lewis and Elizabeth were probably married in North Carolina. Elizabeth died in 1841 [Wheeler]. Sources
