45. JOSIAH KESLER6 (Abraham5, Peter4, Johann Matthaeus3, Johann Philip2, Johann Adolph1, Georg Philip, Theiss), first child of Abraham and Mary (Shupe) Kesler, was born 13 Apr 1834 at Allen Co., Ohio. He died in the service of his country at the Post Hospital -at Nashville, Davidson Co., Tennessee, of typhoid fever on 26 Jan 1865. He is buried at Trinity Lutheran Church Cemetery in Elida, Allen Co., Ohio.

On 4 May 1856 he married Susannah Stemen in Allen Co., Ohio. Susannah was born 14 Jan 1839 at Fairfield Co., Ohio. Susannah died 22 Jun 1927 at Fort Wayne, Allen Co., Indiana, and is buried there.

Soon after marriage they moved to Jackson twp, Van Wert Co., Ohio, where Josiah cleared 40 acres. On 24 Sep 1864 Josiah went to Lima and enlisted in the Union Army. He gave his age as 29 and stated he was born in Allen Co. He listed his occupation as a farmer. He had gray eyes, dark hair, and a fair complextion. He gave his height as 5'6". He received a $100 bounty for enlisting. By the 28th he was at Camp Chase, Ohio, and was assigned to Co. H, 179th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry as a private. He died in the service of his country at the Post Hospital at Nashville, Tennessee, of typhoid fever on 26 Jan 1865. His wife Susannah Kesler received a widow's pension #95134.

On 16 Feb 1869 Susannah Kesler married another veteran of the Union Army Simon Holmes (1843-1922) at Auglaize Co., Ohio. Susannah Holmes applied for another pension after Simon's death which was granted #59901.

ELIZABETH KESLER HUFFER6 (Abraham5, Peter4, Johann Matthaeus3, Johann Philip2, Johann Adolph1, Georg Philip, Theiss), daughter of Abraham and Mary (Shupe) Kesler, was born 6 Apr 1836 at Allen Co., Ohio. She died 24 Jan 1879 at Allen Co., Ohio, and is buried at Greenlawn Cemetery, Elida, Allen Co., Ohio.

She married Simon Huffer 16 Apr 1855 in Allen Co., Ohio. Simon, son of Isaac Huffer, was born 25 Oct 1824 at Fairfield Co., Ohio. Isaac moved to Fairfield Co., Ohio, from Pennsylvania, probably before 1794. Simon Huffer died 21 Aug 1905 at Allen Co., and is buried at Greenlawn Cemetery, Elida, Ohio.

Simon was a farmer. He and his wife were members of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Elida, Ohio. Simon was on the building committee of that church in 1876.

47. PETER KESLER6 (Abraham5, Peter4, Johann Matthaeus3, Johann Philip2, Johann Adolph1, Georg Philip, Theiss), son of Abraham and Mary (Shupe) Kesler, was born 8 Mar 1840 at Allen Co., Ohio. He died on 24 Jul 1929 and is buried at Greenlawn Cemetery, Elida, Allen Co., Ohio.

Peter married Miss Elizabeth Crites on 23 Nov 1863 at Allen Co., Ohio. Elizabeth was born on 16 Oct 1840 at Ohio and she died on 29 Mar 1929 at Ohio. She is buried at Greenlawn Cemetery, Elida, Ohio.

Peter grew up in Allen County and farmed there until the late 1870s when he moved to Van Wert Co., Ohio. There he cleared a farm of 160 acres and operated a small grocery. Later Peter and Elizabeth moved to Middle Point, Ohio, and then to Van Wert, Ohio, where they lived until their deaths.

REUBEN KESLER6 (Abraham5, Peter4, Johann Matthaeus3, Johann Philip2, Johann Adolph1, Georg Philip, Theiss), son of Abraham and Mary (Shupe) Kesler, was born about the year 1842 at Allen Co., Ohio. He died on 14 Jan 1870 at Allen County, and is buried at Trinity Lutheran Church Cemetery at Elida, Allen Co., Ohio.

Reuben married Louisa McClain 3 Apr 1867 at Allen Co., Ohio. Louisa was born on 25 Sep 1845 and died on 20 Apr 1871 at Allen Co., Ohio. She is buried at Trinity Lutheran Church Cemetery at Elida, Ohio.

Reuben enlisted in the Union Army on 24 Mar 1862 at Lima, Ohio. He served in Co. K, 66 Illinois Volunteer Infantry until he was mustered out at Springfield, Illinois, on 28 Apr 1865 [Co. E, 66th Illinois Vol Inf 24 Mar 61-26 Apr 65: Atlas of Allen County, Ohio, 1880 @___]. He was wounded in the hand on 15 May 1864 during the Atlanta campaign. On 15 Mar 1865 his regiment was ordered to cross Black Swamp in NC. When he emerged from the swamp he was quite ill, he never fully recovered and eventually died as a result of the illness he contracted crossing this swamp.

49. AMELIA KESLER STEMEN6 (Abraham5, Peter4, Johann Matthaeus3, Johann Philip2, Johann Adolph1, Georg Philip, Theiss), daughter of Abraham and Mary (Shupe) Kesler, was born 1 Sep 1845 Sep at Allen Co., Ohio. She died 17 Jun 1871 at Allen Co., Ohio, and is buried at Trinity Lutheran Church Cemetery at Elida, Allen Co., Ohio.

Amelia married Aaron Stemen 23 Oct 1863 at Allen Co., Ohio. Aaron was born 12 Aug 1840 at Perry Co., Ohio, and he died 27 Mar 1870. He is buried at Trinity Lutheran Church Cemetery at Elida, Ohio.

Aaron and Amelia apparently moved to Fairfield Co., Ohio, soon after marriage.

Elmer Stemen, son of Aaron and Amelia, was almost 7 years old when his mother died. He went to live with his grandfather Kesler, where he was living in 1880. He listed his occupation as "works on farm." On 13 Sep 1885 he married Mary E. Sherrick (1868-1945) at Allen Co., Ohio. They had three children. Elmer and Mary are buried in Greenlawn Cemetery in Elida, Ohio.

Martin Stemen, son of Aaron and Amelia, was almost 4 when his mother died. After her death he went to live with his Aunt Elizabeth Kesler Huffer and Uncle Simon Huffer. This Aunt died in 1879 when Martin was 11 but we find him living with his Uncle Simon in Sugar Creek twp, Allen County in 1880. He worked as a farm laborer. On 4 Feb 1892 he married Harriet Emily Robinson (18751961) in Allen Co., Ohio. Through his hard work Martin was able to buy a farm in Jennings twp, Putnam Co., Ohio. The farm is still in the Stemen family owned by Martin's son Elmer. Martin and Harriet had five children. One of them David Karon Stemen was a soldier with the 4th Division in France during World War I. He was in France seven months and during that time received no pay or word from home. His Christian faith helped him tremendously. He was gassed during the war which eventually caused his death at age 37 in 1930. Martin and Harriet Stemen are buried in Walnut Grove Cemetery in Allen Co., Ohio.

50. SARAH KESLER MYERS6 (Abraham5, Peter4, Johann Matthaeus3, Johann Philip2, Johann Adolph1, Georg Philip, Theiss), daughter of Abraham and Mary (Shupe) Kesler, was born 26 Aug 1848 at Allen Co., Ohio. She died on 26 Jun 1870 and is buried at Elida, Allen Co., Ohio.

She married Lewis Myers. Lewis was born in 1845 and he died in 1889. He is buried at Walnut Grove Cemetery at Allen Co., Ohio.

Lewis married for his second wife Lydia Sherrick. Sarah was buried in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Elida, Ohio.

Elias married Carolyn "Carrie" Albrecht on 23 Apr 1881 at Allen Co., Ohio. Carrie, daughter of August and Elizabeth Albrecht was born Jul 1862 at Ohio. Both of Carrie's parents were born in Germany.

About the year 1896 Carrie married Ralph E. Haines an Allen Co. farmer. He was born Oct 1851 at Ohio.

Ralph and Carrie had no issue by 1900.

David married Arminta Melissa "Minta" Poling on 29 Nov 1894 at Allen Co., Ohio. Minta was born 28 Dec 1871 at Allen Co. She died 28 Jun 1960 at Lima and is buried at Greenlawn Cemetery at Elida, Ohio.

Before marriage Minta was a schoolteacher. David was an oil well digger. He worked in Ohio, Canada, Wyoming, and Montana. David's and Minta's daughter Frances Elizabeth Kesler was born 16 Oct 1899 at Lima. Frances married Henry Curtis Hawkins on 22 Feb 1922 at Casper, Wyoming. H.C. was born on 28 Aug 1897. He worked for the J.C. Penney Company for 31 years. He died 9 Sep 1963 in Ontario, CA, and was buried at Rushville, Schuyler Co., Illinois. Frances resides at Seal Beach, CA.

54. JACOB KESLER6 (Samuel5, Peter4, Johann Matthaeus3, Johann Philip2, Johann Adolph1, Georg Philip, Theiss), son of Samuel and Louisa (Frazier) Kesler, was born on 2 Aug 1836 at Fairfield Co., Ohio. He appears to have died between 1870 and 1880 at Van Wert Co., Ohio, and is said to be buried at Ridge Cemetery, Van Wert Co., Ohio.

Jacob married Marie "Mary" Eliza DeCamp 17 Jun 1859 at Van Wert Co., Ohio. Mary was born about 1839 at Ohio. Mary married before 1880 William Herring. William and Mary and their family lived at Ridge Twp., Van Wert Co., Ohio, in 1880.

Jacob gave his occupation as farmer in the 1860 and 1870 Ridge Twp., Van Wert Co., Ohio, federal census. Jacob's four children were listed as next of kin in their grandfather Samuel Kesler's probate records Van Wert Co., Ohio.

He died on 22 Dec 1918 at Van Wert Co., Ohio, and he is buried at Ridge Township Cemetery, Van Wert Co., Ohio. His grave is marked with a Grand Army of the Republic marker showing his service during the Civil War.

Peter married Martha Ann Johnson on 1 Sep 1865. Martha, daughter of William and Ellen (Bercaw) Johnson, was born 3 Dec 1844 at Butler Co., Ohio. Martha died 15 Dec 1914 at Van Wert Co., Ohio. She is buried at Ridge Township Cemetery, Van Wert Co., Ohio.

During the Civil War, Peter enlisted 6 Aug 1862 as a private in Co. A, 99th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. On 1 Oct 1864 he transferred to Co. A, 15th Regiment Veteran Reserve Corps. He was mustered out 13 Jul 1865 at Cairo, Illinois.

After the Civil War, Peter and family apparently moved to Shelby Co., Illinois, for a time. He was living in Van Wert Co., Ohio, in 1880, however his daughter was married at Shelby Co., Illinois, in 1896. Peter is again living in Van Wert County in 1900.

John married Hannah S. DeCamp on 3 Dec 1865 at Allen Co., Ohio. Hannah, daughter of Job and Lydia A. (Cavett) DeCamp, was born in 1848. She died in 1926 at Van Wert Co., Ohio.

John received a fair education in the common schools and was reared to manhood on the home farm. After marriage he settled on an 80 acre farm on the Defiance road, where he lived until he bought a farm of 120 acres. [Biographical History of Van Wert County]

Daniel married Elizabeth A. Thompson on 2 Mar 1865 at Shelby Co., Illinois. Elizabeth was born in Mar 1841 at Ohio[1900 federal census]. She died after 1900.

Daniel served as a corporal in Company G, 143d Illinois Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. After the Civil War he farmed at Dry Point township, Shelby Co., Illinois. He was also a grain dealer. In the 1900 federal census Daniel listed his occupation as "merchant general store."
