Notes from John Travis, 19th century local historian:
Anthony Crossley of Ewood, brother of John Crossley of Scaitcliffe, sold the Ewood Estate and Lineholme Mill to John Stansfield of Todmorden Edge.
Further up the lane above EWOOD MALTKILN was Ewood House, the property of John Stansfield, a prosperous putter-out from Todmorden Edge, and also owner of Lineholme Mill.
Past “Rutchley,” there was Lineholme, where a mill had been in existence since before 1800, the power being derived from the water from the tail-goit of old LYDGATE MILL, which stood in a field just by the Railway Inn. The road from Lineholme Bridge formerly went by the riverside to near the later entrance to Robinwood Mill, quite away from the present road, and at the place where CANTEEN SHED now stands there then stood by the side of the road and facing the watercourse “The Old Canteen Inn.” Afterwards the new part of road was made straight down, but the river was not diverted, as the water still had to pass down the old course and goit to the mill of Messrs. Stansfield at Lineholme. The old LYDGATE MILL was entirely demolished about 1860, and part of Lineholme Mill was also done away with, but the shed was added to in later years.
Sutcliffe Halstead & Sons moved from PUDSEY MILL to the new shed built by John Fielden on the site of the demolished Lineholme Mill, as being nearer the town.

4 storey cotton mill with attic called Lineholme Mill, with engine and boiler houses, mixing and scutching rooms, weaving shed, warehouse, offices, sizing rooms, mechanics and blacksmiths shop, with 2 stone chimneys, also gasometer and 18 cottages. Iron waterwheel 32 feet in diameter, 8 feet on the face, 20hp. A pair of horizontal high pressure steam engines, 50hp combined, a beam condensing steam engine 40 hp, another beam condensing steam engine 30hp. This lot also comprises an annual payment of £52 by Messrs Hollinrake for the privilege of taking water from the head goit into Canteen Mills.

On account of the recent fire at FROSTHOLME MILL, Messrs Smith & Sons lost no time in arranging for carrying on their business in the meantime. The firm succeeded in securing the lower portion of Lineholme Shed and Springwood Mill. 884 looms were removed to Lineholme where some portion commenced running on the morning of this date, the women and young persons working in the day time, and the men in the night.

About 50 of the workpeople employed by the firm of Messrs Crabtree & Farrar, Linehome Mill, with a few friends, met to celebrate the wedding of Mr. Walter Farrar. Mr. Marshall, Patmos, provided a substantial repast at his rooms in Union Street, and a very pleasant time was spent with songs, dances, recitations etc. Mr. Percy Greenwood supplied the music.
