Notes

There is a record of a small spinning mill at Burnt Acres in 1811

The later mill appears to have been built before 1860 as a cotton mill with a small dye works. It ceased operating as such about 1878. Martin Holt acquired the site about 1893 and re-built it in its present form, using it as a picker making manufactory, hence the name Eastwood Picker Works.

MARTIN HOLT, one of six picker making brothers from Sourhall, Todmorden, acquired this mill about 1893. His son John ran it until about 1930. Martin’s story can be read by following the link.

Partnership between William Thomas Pickles & William Horsfall, cotton manufacturers at Perseverance Mill, Erringden, under the style of Pickles & Horsfall, dissolved and carried on by William Thomas Pickles.

Charles Crabtree entered into partnership with John Marshall on 23rd December 1860 to run 22 looms at Burnt Acres Mill, Eastwood. They then took additional space at ANCHOR, HOPE STREET and CARR MILLS also at Cornholme and Rochdale. About 1870, John Marshall withdrew from the partnership.

Leigh & Co. (new); grinding machine, 2 emery rollers; 3 self acting mules 500 spindles each of 1.25inch gauge; 5 throstle frames 1,240 spindles with 2.25inch lift. All made by J. Else & Co; 200 spindle winding frame; 18 yard warp mill; 61 patent power looms 41inch reed space; plaiting machine; beaming frame, cloth press etc.
