Born in 1879 in Todmorden, Ralph enlisted with the 2nd Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers at the age of 20, serial number 9637. He served in the Second Boer War in South Africa. He visited Cape Town and told stories of the troops buying oranges from "the natives", which they boiled to make marmalade. He was invited to join the police force, but his fiancee Louisa Ingham refused to join him out there, so he returned and they married in 1904. His family still has the silver medal that was awarded to him. Photo and details kindly sent by his grandson, Brian Marland.
