WILLIAM DEWHIRST 1823-1869
William was the son of the school master at Cross Stone School. He later set up Vale Academy on Wellington Road in Todmorden jointly with his brother James. This was an elite private school offering not only reading and writing but also Mathematics, French, German, Latin and Greek. By 1861 he was a partner in the firm Dewhirst & Nuttall at Ferneylee Mill, employing 160 people. William was a talented amateur artist. He died aged 46 from the effects of a fall from his horse.
