Notes from John Travis, contemporary historian:
Springside Mill in the lowest part of Langfield, nearly 2 miles from Todmorden, was built by Henry Crossley who up to that time was in partnership with Mr. Wilcock at WINTERS MILL. The mill was finished and partly furnished, and it ran for a while. Henry Crossley overstretched himself, so he quietly went away to America. The mill and residence were later sold to Charles Chambers of Todmorden.

Halifax Guardian 12th November 1864
Sale 24th November 1864. Nearly new erected cotton mill, erected within 3 years, Spring Mill Langfield, together with warehouses, engine and boiler house, and other outbuildings. 2 engines of 30hp and 20hp respectively, and a 40hp boiler. The mill is 87 feet by 78 feet and 4 storeys. Steam engines supplied by Wood of Sowerby Bridge. Also dwelling house.
Sale 28th November 1864. Instructions from assignees of Henry Crossley, Spring Mill Eastwood. Machinery – 231 cloth power looms, 135 of which are newly made by Graham & Sons of Burnley. The rest only worked a short time and supplied by Mr. Lord and Mr. Cooper of Burnley. Also plaiting machine, 2 warping machines etc.
Both sales postponed.

Third and fourth rooms 39 feet by 38 feet. Mixing room 35 feet by 28 feet. Grinding room 26 feet by 21 feet. Engine 50hp. 2 boilers 80hp one nearly new. Apply Abraham Lord, Canal Street Works, owner.
