Notes:

Reuben first married a Mary Clevenger, a woman he may have known through the Springboro, Ohio, settlement, a place where he may have also first met members of the Jesse and Eleanor Townsend family. After Reuben�s first wife died in 1857, leaving him with five young children to care for, the hardworking farmer and widower needed to find a new wife to help with the children and the household chores. By this time, Reuben lived in the neighborhood of the family of Jesse and Eleanor Townsend in Franklin Township, Wayne County, Indiana, and probably courted the young Jane Townsend. Jane�s parents opposed the match between widower Reuben and young Jane for at least two reasons: first, Reuben was eighteen years older than Jane; second, Reuben was not a Quaker (He subscribed to the beliefs of the Universalist Church.), so a marriage was forbidden by the tenets of the Quaker faith. However, Reuben and Jane went to Centerville (the county seat at that time), Wayne County, Indiana, and William E. Barton joined in marriage said Reuben and Jane on 31 July 1858 (marriage license, Wayne County Circuit Court records, Richmond, Indiana). Their marriage license had been issued the previous day. Given the hostility that undoubtedly existed in the neighborhood against their marriage, Reuben and Jane decided to move their family to Sims Township, Grant County, Indiana, which they did in 1859. The reason Reuben may have decided to move to Sims Township was because two of his brothers, Samuel and Thompson, owned farms in adjoining Richland Township, Grant County, Indiana. Ultimately, Reuben and Jane became the parents of seven children: Cynthia E. and Mary J. (twins), Jesse Townsend (my great-grandfather and namesake of his maternal grandfather), Susie C., Thirza M., Thompson, and Della V. When Jane (Townsend) Clanin�s father wrote his will on 19 July 1865, shortly before his death on 2 August 1865 (Will Book No. 4, pp. 305-6, Wayne County Courthouse, Richmond, Indiana), he directed that any portion of his estate that remained after the death of his widow, Eleanor, be divided equally among his children, �except the portion that would fall to my daughter Jane Clanin. I hereby direct that her portion shall be for the exclusive use and benefit of her children.� Jesse Townsend further directed in his will that his grandson and namesake Jesse Townsend Clanin (along with two other boys who may or may not have been grandsons) be given $30 by Eleanor Townsend to buy a colt.
