Notes:

James Pharo, founder of the New Jersey branch of the family, came from Lincolnshire, England, in the ship "Shields" and was among the first settlers of Burlington, New Jersey. "On the 10th day of December, 1678, the ship 'Shields' came to Burlington, being the first ship to come that far up the Delaware river." James Pharo was a surveyor for William Penn. The wife of James Pharo, who was named Ann, his son Jarvis (or Gervais) and his daughter Anne, accompanied him to America. In the bible of Timothy Pharo, senior, we find the following record: "The Pharos (meaning James Pharo's children) were born near the great Minister in the city of Lincolnshire, old England." Two other children, Mary and James, were born in New Jersey. James Pharo died Third month 3, 1688.

Chesterfield (NJ) Monthly Meeting of Friends, Book A, p. 281 Eighth Mo. 7, 1731: George Holloway and Ruth Wood appeared here and acquainted with this meeting, that God permitting, to take each other in marriage; his mother being present signified her approbation, and this meeting appoints our Friends John Cheshire and Samuel Wi to make enquiry of his conversation and clearness on account of marriage and report to our next meeting. Ninth mo. 4, 1731: George Holloway and Ruth Wood appeared and signified the continued intentions of marriage. Nothing appearing to obstruct, they have liberty to accomplish their marriage. Chesterfield Marriage Certificates, p. 62: George Holloway, of Hunterdon County, and Ruth Wood, of Burlington County, were married at a meeting held at Springfield, 9 Mo. 10, 1731. Witnesses:- John Holloway, James Holloway, Frances Schooley, James Shreve, Mary Woods, James Pharo, Richard Fr and twenty-seven other names.
