IN MEMORY OF ADA NOFTSGER TOWNSEND Afa Noftsger Townsend, age 95, died August 6, 1987 at Clinton County Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. She had been a resident of Wlmington Extended Care for six years. She was the daughter of Gerard Benton and Ida Whiney Noftsger and was born in Morrisvill, Ohio on January 3, 1892. She was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Morridville, where her father, Gerard, had been Superintendent of the Sunday School for 35 years. She attended grade school in Morrisville. She went to Wilmington College for high school and all four years of college. She graduated from Wilmington College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in the class of 1911. She was a member of Delta Omega Theta Sorority. She taught school a short time in Clinton County before becoming the wife of Lloyd Murphy Townsend on December 16, 1913. Upon her marriage she became a member of Newberry Monthly Meeting, now Martinsville Monthly Meeting (Society of Friends). She was a member and held offices in the Martinsville Order of Eastern Start receiving the fifty year pin. She had been a member of the Martinsville Book Club and the Martinsville bridge Club since the 1920's. She was preceded in death by her husband Lloyd, three sons, William Eugene, Wayne L., and Robert Gerard Townsend. She was a gold star mother for having lost William Eugene during World War II. A sister Edna Marie Noftsger died in the early 1930's and sister, Mazie, died in infancy. She is survived by a daughter, Harriett Townsend Sindler Levy and her husband Harry of Columbia, South Carolina; a daughter-in=law, Hazel Townsend Smith and her husband Dr. Mervin Smith of Columbus, Ohio; five grandchildren and six great grandchildren. The five grandchildren are Cynthia Townsend Moore, David Townsend, Mary Ruth Townsend, Margaret Townsend and Frank Lloyd Sindler.

George's first wife, Diana Bickel, died at 38, leaving George with 8 children ages 18 - 3. WIthin a year he married Permilia Alkire. Their two children died in infany and they in 1860. George then married Susan Foster Weihart. They had 7 children. Susan was younger than George's first four children. George was sympathetic to the North during the Civil War, and it while he and some troops, were eating at a friends home near Sutton, WV the Tuning Brothers, a Confederate guerrilla group and some Confederate troops captured them. Although George was not a member of the Northern Troops, he was taken prisoner also. After being taken, the troops, along with Capt. Hyer, their commander, were led on a march to Richmond, Va. It was during this march, that George almost lost his life. In passing through Webster County they had to cross the a river. Since most of the men managed to escape, and some were recaptured, including George, their hands were tied behind their backs, making walking difficult. When crossing the rivers, George and the rest of the prisoners were denied the pleasure of drinking. One of the captives pleaded with the Tunings to let them drink, but his pleas were denied. It is not known how long George and his companions remained in prison, before they were released and sent home.
