Notes:

Civil War Veteran: 1st Regiment Virginia Partisan Rangers 62nd Virginia Mounted Infantry, Co. G ============ 62nd Virginia Roster notes: Isaac Gregory was captured in May of 1863 at Buckhannon Va (now WV) during one of Imbodens' raids into Western Virginia. This raid, just prior to the Gettysburg Campaign helped to feed Lees' army before the invasion of PA. The 62nd Virginia roster indicates he was at the Camp Chase Prison Camp in Columbus, Ohio. He was transferred to the prison at Point Lookout MD in Nov. 1863, was released in April of 1864 having taken the oath not to bear arms against the US. The roster lists him as a farmer, 5ft, 7, with dark hair and blue eyes. ============ Arrested: by 151st New York USA. Where: Buckhannon VA Date: May 1863 Remarks:sent to Camp Chase May 28 1863 Source: Register No 96,Dept.West VA., page 76 ============ The 62nd Virginia was not officially recognized until January 28, 1863, although its history actually dates from May 7, 1862 when Captain John D. Imboden of the Staunton Artillery was commissioned colonel and authorized to raise a regiment of partisan rangers. Imboden spent the rest of 1862 recruiting the First Regiment Virginia Partisan Rangers in the western counties of Virginia. The Colonel met with such success that by early 1863 his command was able to subdivide into a mounted cavalry regiment (18th Virginia Cavalry) and an artillery battery (McClanahan's). These units were brigaded as the Northwestern Brigade and Imboden was promoted to brigadier general. The 62nd Virginia began its active career in the Jones-Imboden Raid followed by participation in the Gettysburg Campaign. one of the regiment's most noted engagements occured on July 6 when it helped to save the Southern wagon train at Williamsport Maryland. During the five month period from mid-May through mid-October, 1864 the 62nd Virginia participated in all the hard fought battles in the Shenandoah Valley in addition to joining the Army of Northern Virginia at the Second Battle of Cold Harbor. The 62nd Virginia faced its most severe test at the Battle of New Market where it bore the brunt of the Confederate casualties but received little recognition for its contribution to the Southern victory. The regiment rejoined the Northwestern Brigade following the Battle of Lynchburg for Early's march on Washington. Two months of skirmishing northeast of Winchester was followed by participation in the disastrous battles of Third Winchester and Fisher's Hill after which the regiment went on outpost duty in the Page Valley. The lack of food and forage forced the 62nd Virginia to temporarily disband in mid-January 1865. The regiment saw little action upon its return to active duty in late February 1865 as the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia on April 9, 1865 virtually ended the warfare in the Old Dominion. Text of Recruiting Poster for Imboden's Partisan Rangers, of whom Isaac Gregory was a member of Company "G": Brave Men of the West - Defend Virginia

My purpose is to wage the most active warfare against our brutal invaders and their domestic allies; to hang about their camps and shoot down every sentinel, picket, courier and wagon driver we can find; to watch opportunities for attacking convoys and forage trains, and thus render the country so unsafe that they well not dare to move except in large bodies. Our own Virginia traitors--men of the Pierpont and Carlile stamp will receive our special regards. Our enemies are waging a war of unparalleled barbarity and ferocity upon us; murdering unarmed, peaceful citizens; outraging helpless women; burning the houses over the heads of innocent childhood; plundering the homes of widows and orphans short , laying waste the land wherever their armies have penetrated. Their hellish passions not satiated with these acts of fiendish brutality, are seeking further gratification by emancipating the slaves and putting arms into their hands to inaugurate a war of such atrocity as to make devils stand aghast at its horrors. Such being our enemies, and such their purposes, I hold that by the laws of God and man, it is our duty to slay them by all the legitimate means in our power. We have conducted the war on the highest principles of christian nations. Our enemies have adopted the Cammanche code in all except scalping. There is but one mode of putting an end to such a contest and such a system. We must rise as one man and slay the invader wherever and whenever we find him. The honor of our wives and daughters, the sanctify of our homes, the liberty of our children MUST be defended by MEN of the South, or all is lost. We all desire peace, and yet there is but one mode by which it can be secured--the destruction of the Yankee armies. We can have peace by this means, and that right speedily, if every man will do his duty. We are infinitely stronger as a nation than we were one year ago. Our independence is as certain as any future event can be and the time for its recognition is a matter perfectly under our own control. I therefore appeal to the men of the West to unite with me at once in the effort to deliver our native mountains from the pollution that has been brought upon them. It is only men that I want; men who are not afraid to be shot at in such cause; men who will pull a trigger on a Yankee with as much alacrity as they would on a mad dog, men whose conscience won't be disturbed by the sight of a vandal carcass. I don't want nervous, squeamish individuals to join me--they will be safer a home where the women can protect them and the children and calm their nerves when alarming news is circulating. J. D. Imboden Colonel Partisan Rangers

Notes:

He acquired 100 acres from Paschal Davis along the Bullpasture River in 1803, sold it by Nov. 30, 1805 and settled on 300 acres in what is now West Virginia. He was called "John, the Pioneer of Webster County, Virginia" (now West Virginia). According to tax tickets, he later owned 2200 acres in Braxton and Randolph Conties (now Webster County, WV) 4 miles on both sides of the Back Fork of the Elk River. John Miller was a prominent farmer in Old Augusta City, especially that part which became Bath Cty in 1790.
