Notes:

John Stites departed this life September, 24th day, on Sunday, being 47 years, 4 months and 6 days old. He left five children, two sons and three daughters: namely his sons John and Townsend, and his daughters Rhoda, Sarah and Tobitha. Rhoda, the eldest child and Tobitha the youngest. He went unwell with fever and ague on Saturday and went from home on Monday, September (date unknown) to go up the Delaware with a load of rails, and continued unwell, and on this day he went out Denisses Creek and stood up Delaware to Grub's landing, then sold part of his load and then went to Kingston and sold the rest, and set off for home and was taken worse and went into Wilmington on Saturday, September the 23d, and next day died, and was buried in Methodist Churchyard, in Wilmington.

Notes:

Elijah was forever in financial difficulty and his brother James was forever bailing him out. In one or two cases James assumed the debt of his brother Elijah and Elijah was to pay James. It seems that perhaps he didn't always do that.
