Notes:

Bethanah Haines was a resident of Frederick Co., Va., in 1747. No record of him after that date has been found, and whether or not he remained in Frederick Co. or vicinity is not known. He married Mary _______, whose identity has not been established. Since there is no record of the date he removed from New Jersey to Virginia, it is not known whether his marriage took place in the former or latter state, or elsewhere. It was not a happy marriage. On Jan. ll, 1747/8 Bethanah Haines and his wife Mary agreed to separate because of differences, disputes and quarrels. On the same date he made a deed of gift to his son Robert. There is no such concrete evidence that Hanna, Zilpha, Mary and Rebecca were also his daughters, but it is reasonable to suppose so. When Mary was married in 1760, she is referred to as Mary Haines, Jr. Mary Haines, Robert Haines and Rebecca Haines were witnesses to this marriage and all their names appear in the right hand column, where members of the family usually signed. Anthony and Zilpha Moore were also witnesses. When Robert Haines was married in 1780, the Alexander Oglesby family, the Anthony Moore family and the Robert Rea family were all witnesses. Their attendance to other marriages at Crooked Run MM indicate the probability that they were members of one family. It is likely that Mary Haines was the one who was living at Crooked Run on 12 mo. 20, 1758, when she was visited by Joshua Brown; also the one who on October 31, 1768, leased land to Anthony Moore; also the one whose decease on 8 mo. 2, 1786, is recorded at Crooked Run MM.

Item - I do hereby give and bequest unto my son, Enoch Haines, the sum of five shillings and no more, he having had his portion. Item - I do hereby give and bequest unto my son, Bethanah Haines, the sum of five shillings and no more, he having already had his share. Item - I do hereby give and bequest unto my daughter Sarah, the wife of Edward Hillier, the sum of five shillings and no more, she having had what I determined. Item - I do hereby (after my wife's decease) give and bequeath all and every part of the residue and remainder of all my estate whatsoever and wheresoever unto my daughter, the widow, Elizabeth Newberry, and to her assigns forever. Lastly - I do hereby nominate, constitute and appoint my wife, Mary Haines, and my daughter, Elizabeth Newberry, executors of this my last will and testament, hereby revoking, making null and void and null every and all former wills by me heretofore at any time made. Notes:

Aynhoe records indicate they resided there in 1665, 1666,1672 and 1682. Parish records in England spelled the name Hains and Haynes. The family embarked from Gravesend, England on the "Amity" with Richard Diamond as master. They sailed from Downs, England for West Jersey on the 23rd of April 1682. Richard died at sea and his son Joseph was born at sea. His wife and children settled near Rancacos Creek in Burlington Co., NJ. ------------ from "Clovercrost Chroniclels" by Mary Rhoads Haines, Lippincott Company, Philadelphia, PA: Richard Haines of Aynho, Northamptonshire, England, lived in the latter part of the seventeenth century. His wife's name is believed to have been Margaret. Their eldest son, John, was the first of the family to come to America, and then sent an invitation to his parents and brothers to follow him. Richard and Margaret Haines and their four younger sons--Richard, William, Thomas, and Joseph--accordingly embarked, but in the slow voyage of those days the father died on the sea.The Haines family is said by antiquarians to be of Saxon origin and first appeared in Devonshire, in the West Saxon Kingdom, in the early part of the sixth century among the followers of Hengst and Horan, when the family name was known as Hayne until the compilation of the Doomsday Book, when it was changed to Haines. William Haines, to whom a Coat-of-Arms was confirmed on June 10, 1578, was Yeoman of the Guard to Queen Elizabeth, (1558-1603). Richard I lived on the border of Oxfordshire, Aynho-on-ye-Hill, County of Oxon, Northhamptonshire, England. The first records are found of Richard I in Parish Records of St. Michael's Church, Aynhoe Parish, King's Sutton Hundred, Northamptonshire, England, when his son Richard II was baptised on August 6, 1665. Richard was descended from an ancient family of Haynes which had made "illustrious marriage connections", and all its members of the dates of the deeds, occupied the high estate of its ancestors. The Armoral design runs back to 607. Richard I and Margaret became members of the Society of Friends during the period of 1672-1676, "old style". His creed and principles were transmitted to the other Western lands. He belonged to the Oxfordshire Monthly Meeting (M.M.). This religious association helped them to decide to emigrate to Burlington Co. New Jersey, Friends settlement. Richard I and his family departed from Downs, England for America April 23, 1682 on Richard Diamond's ship, the "Amity". They finally set out to sea from Grasses End, Wales. Richard sicken from the rigors of the trip, died, and was buried at sea enroute to America. Margaret and the now five children finally landed at Burlington, New Jersey, in August, 1682 where they were joined by the eldest son John, who came over two years previous. Haines, Richard N.A. New Jersey 1682, 9448 p. 35, Virkus: Immigrant Ancestors, wife Margaret. From England, 1682, died on the voyage; his wife, Margaret, settled on Rancous Creek, near Lumberton, Burlington Co., New Jersey. Richard I had not made the decision to leave England without making provision for a livelihood in America. West Jersey, through the influence of William Penn and others, was being settled largely by members of the Society of Friends. Richard I was a farmer and a man of some means, as he was able to purchase land before leaving for America. He purchased 100 acres of land from Edward Bylling, late of Westminster, gent: to Richard Haines of Anve of ye Hill, Co. of Oxon, husbandman, for 100 acres in West Jersey in April 21, 1682.
