Notes:

From "Clovercroft Chronicles" by Mary Rhoads Haines, Lippincott Company, Philadelphia, PA: John Haines had probably brought his wife, Ester Borton, with him from England. Tradition says that his first home was a cave on the banks of the Rancocus, not distant from a small tribe of Indians known as the Cotoxen. John Haines appears to have been a man of energy and executive ability. In 1683, probably soon after his arrival, he bought six hundred acres of land in Goshen, Chester County, Pennsylvania, of Edward Jones and others. Of Isaac Norris and David Lloyd he purchased several hundred acres more, and in 171l, of Thomas Mercer, of Aynho-on-the-Hill, another tract. He had two hundred acres on the Rancosus, and was joint proprietor with his brother Richard, son Jonathan, and others of two thousand one hundred and ninety acres, upon which was located the Friendship Mill, on a branch of the Rancocus. After the survey was made they bought the Indian title and received deeds from the chief We-Sosig. John and Esther Haines had six sons and seven daughters, most of whom reached maturity. Esther Haines deceased in 1719, and from the testimony of Friends appears to have been an earnest Christian. In 1722 John Haines married Hannah Wood, widow of John Whitall. He deceased in 1728, and Friends recorded that "he was an appointed elder and a zealous man."Farmer of Evesham Twp, came to America with John Borton in the "Griffin" in 1679, and lived at first in a cave in "Haines Bank" on the south branch of Rancocas Creek, below Lumberton. He owned many acres of land in NJ and PA John sailed on the "Griffin" to America, 1679, two years previous to his family with the John Borton family of Aynhoe and lived in a cave below Lumberton, New Jersey, on the south branch of Rancocas Creek. In 1683 he bought 600 acres of land at Goshen, Chester County, Pennsylvania. The town of West Chester, Pennsylvania, is built upon land owned by John Haines. John became the owner of many acres of land in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. He eventually owned outright 2154 acres of farm land and forest. He was a partner in the purchase of the "Friendship Tract" in 1711. This had 2240 acres of farm and wood land. They operated a Friendship Saw Mill to process the trees that they harvested from their land.
