Notes:

John Borton, with his wife Ann, who lived at Hillsdown, along the Northampton river, in Burlington county, New Jersey, formerly from Parish Aynhoe, Northamptonshire, England, brought with them to the monthly meeting a certificate from the monthly meetings of Burton, in Oxfordshire, dated the third month, fifth day, old style, 1679, the same signed by a number of persons attesting to their character and standing. The certificate stated that the signers "have known ye sd John and Ann Borton these many years, and that they have walked honestly among us, living in the fear of God, and in obedience to the blessed truth revealed in this our day, and have been of a good savour to friends and to their neighbors in ye village where they dwel." John Borton died at Hillsdown in 1687, his will was dated fifth month, and proved in the eleventh month of the same year, and in the document he names his sons John and William, and six daughters, but does not name the latter. His children were: William, Ann, Elizabeth, Esther, *Mary, John and two other daughters. John Borton was apparently first of Bortons or Austins to come to Burlington in 1679. He came 2 years after first large influx of Quakers from England. Freeholders census in 1699 showed that more than a third of the landowners of the Province (New Jersey) were Quakers. The highest percentage of Friends was in Burlington County. Following the first meetings in the sailcloth tent Burlington Friends successively in the houses of John Wollston and Thomas Gardner, until they completed a meetinghouse in 1682.
